Grizzlies Downed In Road Opener Against JWU

Box Score Denver, CO – The Adams State University Women's lacrosse team hit the road this weekend, visiting Johnson & Wales University in what would end on a hard-fought 10-12 fall for the Grizzlies. Adams State falls to 0-2 on the season with one last match-up before heading into conference play.

How It Happened
The starting faceoff would see a dominant Johnson & Wales team take early possession of the ball followed by a successful clear to put the Grizzly defense on their heels. The early Wildcat possession would be short lived as sophomore midfield, Delanie Ward would gain Adams State's first possession of the matchup off a turnover. Grizzlies' first successful clear would be quickly followed by the first points of the bout, as freshman Michelle Penoloza-Heredia would find her way into JWU territory to fire a shot that saw the back of the net.
 
Adams State would come in hot, flaunting a 5-1 lead over the Wildcats early in the first half. JWU would respond by putting up three unanswered goals before allowing a sixth point for the Grizzlies. The first Wildcat lead would be seen with just under four minutes of play left before halftime, as they would put up three more unanswered goals. Freshman, Sopheea Vomund would respond by putting a shot into the back of the net with 52 seconds left on the clock, earning a hat trick within the first half. The two teams would go into halftime knotted up at seven.
 
The second half would kick off with plenty of hard defense played on both ends. With just over three minutes elapsed after halftime, a dominant Grizzly offense would find their way into Wildcat territory to draw a free position shot for Penoloza-Heredia. The freshman would send her third collegiate goal into the back of the net to score a hat trick on the day. JWU would respond with four unanswered goals throughout the second half, putting the Grizzlies down 8-11 with just under ten minutes left on the clock. Sopheea Vomund and Alexis Cooper would rally the Grizzlies back into contention, putting up two more goals to make the score 10-11. Wildcats would end on top however, concluding the non-conference matchup with a final score of 10-12.
 
Top scorers for the Grizzlies included freshman attack, Sopheea Vomund who would put up her first four collegiate goals on the day. Michelle Penoloza-Heredia also came in hot, putting up a hat-trick to earn her first three collegiate goals on the day. Sophomore midfield, Delanie Ward would put up two goals for the Grizzlies within the first half. Sophomore attack Alexis Cooper would score a lone goal for the Grizzlies.
 
Jordan Adamek would see 35 total shots, while logging 23 saves on the day.
 
Adams State would be outshot 39-34 throughout the matchup. Grizzlies would have 36 turnovers to JWU's 31. Yellow cards would be of plenty, as JWU would earn nine on the day to Adams State's four.
 
Grizzlies are up against Rockhurst University for a noon matchup this Sunday to conclude non-conference games for the 2020 season.
