SALT LAKE CITY—The Adams State University volleyball team moved to 3-0 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference portion of their schedule on Thursday night when they defeated the Westminster Griffins in four sets inside the Behnken Fieldhouse. With the win, that saw the Grizzlies win by scores of 25-10, 25-20, 17-25, 23-25 and 16-14 the Grizzlies move to 7-5 overall on the season.
The Grizzlies has little resistance in the first set as they had 12 kills and hit for a .375 clip with four aces in the set and only allowed eight kills by the Griffins while Westminster hit -.061 in the set.
The second set was a lot more competitive. Despite the Grizzlies jumping out to a 4-0 lead, Westminster took a lead and appeared to be in the driver's seat. Adams State did not back down. Instead, the Grizzlies finished off the set with a 14-5 run to get the 25-20 win. They got 14 kills in the set and three aces.
The third set saw a see-saw battle ensue early. The Griffins took control as they led 13-5. Adams State score a couple more points but they got the win 25-17.
The second set saw the Grizzlies take the lead from the onset and led 18-12 before the Griffins flew back in and tied the set up at 18. After a Grizzly timeout the teams tied at 20, 21, 22 and 23 before Westminster closed out the set with an ace and a kill from Melinda Messner.
The fifth set saw the two teams trade points with the score tied at three before Westminster took a 5-3 lead. The lead did not stand as the Grizzlies continued to tie the set multiple times. The Griffens led by two points for a while and led 12-10 but kills by
Shannon Mulkey and
Anna Huggins tied the set again at 12 followed by an ace by
Madeleine Benally gave them a 13-12 lead. With the set tied at 13, Huggins earned another kill to push it match point where the set was tied at 14.
Mulkey then had a kill to push the score to 15-14 before
Cindy Garcia earned the win.
Pacing four players with double-digit kills, Huggins had 15 in the game while
Chasey Blach had 12, Mulkey had 11 and
Sai Collins had 10.

The Grizzlies will return to action as they will take on Colorado Mesa University on Friday. The Mavericks dropped out of the top 25 for the first time in nine polls this week. They are still garnering votes.
