ALAMOSA, Colo.—The Adams State University softball team continues their homestand on Saturday and Sunday when they host the Colorado Mesa University Mavericks in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (RMAC) action. The four-game series will cap off ten straight home games for the Grizzlies.
Adams State enters the weekend with an 8-15 overall record and a 3-9 RMAC record. They are fresh off a twin bill sweep of the New Mexico Highlands Cowgirls in non-conference action on Wednesday. They have won four-of-six games on this homestand.
The Grizzlies took two-of-four from the Black Hills State University Yellow Jackets last week in which, Head Coach
Dervin Taylor, in his 14th season at the helm, notched career victory No. 300.
The Grizzlies are paced by junior
Jade Garbiso who had her a day on Wednesday. Garbiso is hoisting a .471 batting average as she has 33 hits in 70 at bats with 11 walks and one hit by pitch. Of her 33 hits, 17 have gone for extra bases as she has scored 28 runs this year and has 15 RBI. Garbiso is the ace for the Grizzlies in the circle as she holds a 5.63 ERA in her six appearances.
Sydney Muniz and
Belinda Vargas join Garbiso as the three Grizzlies to have batting averages above the Mendoza line at .343 and .328, respectively. Vargas has three home runs this year, two of which have been inside-the-park home runs including a grand slam on Wednesday.
Colorado Mesa (18-4, 10-0 RMAC) enters the weekend on the second longest active streak in Division II with 17 straight wins. They also had two games on Wednesday as they earned a 5-4 and a 6-1 win over Northern State University in the first-ever games between the two teams.
Freshman Myah Arrieta is one of many leaders for the Mavericks as she has a .375 batting average with 24 hits on 64 at bats. She has two home runs and 12 RBI. As a team the Mavericks are overall power hitters with 29 home runs while the pitching staff is stench. They have held opponents to just five home runs.
