LUBBOCK, Texas – Riding high after two-straight wins, Adams State found the going tough this morning against Texas Permian Basin, and the result was a 3-0 sweep at the hands of the Falcons to kick off day two of the Lubbock Christian University Invitational.
With the 25-18, 25-18, 25-23 decision, ASU falls to 2-4 on the year.
As a team, the Grizzlies hit just .084 after posting a season-best .306 efficiency rate in their last match, a 4-set win over Southwestern Oklahoma yesterday.
The opener saw ASU score the match's first three points and maintain its cushion at three after an
Aileen Bugas service ace brought the tally to 11-8. That's when TPB rallied, outscoring the Grizzlies 9-2 to take control of the set, 17-13, and eventually the opening stanza.
The Falcons used that momentum to charge to a 9-4 edge in set two, until
Sierra Leone Sanchez's serve brought ASU to within 9-8. TPB, however, used its own four-point run to widen its lead, maintaining that margin and putting the set away at 25-18.
Adams State looked to get on the board after taking an early 5-4 lead behind Bugas' serving prowess. That didn't last long, however, as Texas Permian Basin went on its own run to take a 14-11 lead midway through the frame.
The Grizzlies roared back to forge five ties, the last at 20-all, only to have the Falcons reciprocate to bring them to match point at 24-21.
A TPB attacker error and
Shae Sapiga service ace saved two match points, but a kill by TPB's Taurie Magee put the finishing touch on the set to give the Falcons a 3-0 sweep.
Cindy Garcia paced ASU with nine kills while Bugas led the squad with 13 digs.
ASU will look to get back in the win column today at 5 pm (CT) as it faces a familiar foe in the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs. This will be the second meeting between the two schools in six days after the Mountain Lions bested the Grizzlies in last weekend's tournament by a 3-1 margin.
