LOUISVILLE, Ken. — The Adams State University Grizzly men's and women's cross country teams competed in the Louisville Cross Country Classic at E.P. "Tom" Sawyer State Park in Louisville, Kentucky, Saturday morning. Both men and women finished second with both teams having success.
The women led through the first two kilometers and finished the 5-kilometer race strong in second place. Grand Valley State took the team title with 58 points as they had three runners in the top nine to total 58 points. The Grizzlies strung together 95 points for second place.
The Grizzlies were led by senior Brianna Robles' (17:10.0) 7th place finish. She was followed by freshman Vienna Lahner's (17:26.7) 18th place finish. Junior Morgan Hykes (17:31.6), sophomore Ava O'Connor (17:33.4), and junior Emily Schoellkopf (17:34.0) finished 22nd, 23rd, and 25th to total 95 team points.
Also competing for the Grizzlies was sophomore Fiona Hawkins, who finished in 26th place with a time of 17:34.3 and junior Reina Paredes finished in 43rd place with a time of 17:52.1. Freshman Tristian Spence (17:55.1) finished in 49th place, junior Elena Carey (18:09.7) finished in 79th place and junior Rachel O'Brien (18:12.8) finished in 83rd place. Amalia Dorion (18:27.6) and sophomore Maggie McCleskey (18:58.0) rounded out the Grizzlies 107th and 182nd places, respectively.
On the men's side, the Grizzlies ended up taking second place by one point in a very close race. The Grizzlies' 105 team points placed them just behind Grand Valley State's 104 points, earning them runner-up.
Junior Romain Legendre led the pack taking third place overall with a time of 23:30.4 over 8 kilometers.
He was followed by senior Dayton Brown's (23:54.2) ninth place finish, Yonis Haile's (24:09.0) 22nd place finish, Awet Beraki's (24:22.0) 33rd place finish, and James Dunne's (24:24.9) 38th place finish.
Also representing the Grizzlies in Saturday's race was sophomore Kidus Begshaw (24.43.5) in 69th place, junior David Cardenas (24.45.5) in 72 nd place, junior Mikah Paiz (24.53.8) in 85th place, freshman Emill Bezeckney (24.56.3) in 92nd place, junior Elijah De La Cerda (25:09.7) in 119th place, freshman Micah Swann (25:10.4) in 120th place, junior Andrew O'Keefe (25:20.6) in 150th place, sophomore Kailer Smith (25:27.5) in 169th place and junior Juan Rosales (25:30.5) in 176th place.
After the strong showing the Grizzlies will be back in action next Friday, Oct. 6th , when they travel to Colorado Springs to participate in the UCCS XC Classic.
