Adams State Seeks Key Road Victory Over New Mexico Highlands

Las Vegas, N.M. – The Adams State Grizzlies head to Las Vegas, New Mexico, this Saturday to face the New Mexico Highlands Cowboys in an RMAC showdown that could serve as a turning point in their season. Despite setbacks, Adams State will look to harness the strengths of its key players and capitalize on a Cowboys' defense that has been vulnerable in recent games.

Adams State has encountered challenges offensively, averaging just 12.4 points per game, but the Grizzlies have shown potential in both the passing and running games. Quarterback Chase Nelson has led the charge with 1,105 passing yards and five touchdowns this season. Nelson's connection with running back and lead receiver Ahmare Merrida could prove critical, as Merrida's versatility in both rushing and receiving offers a dual threat. Though the Grizzlies' rushing game has averaged only 70.4 yards per game, this matchup presents an opportunity for Merrida and the ground attack to shine against a Highlands defense that has allowed an average of 277 rushing yards per game.

Defensively, the Grizzlies have shown resilience despite facing high-powered offenses throughout the season. Linebackers Seth Shaw and Christian Toelei'u have been the backbone of Adams State's defense, combining for more than 80 tackles and bringing a physical presence to the field. The Grizzlies' defense, which has allowed 2,001 rushing yards and 1,862 passing yards this season, will need to contain the Cowboys' big-play ability, led by quarterback Joey Cave and his go-to receiver, Teneil Nichols. Nichols, with six touchdown receptions, poses a major challenge to Adams State's secondary, which has struggled to limit passing attacks.

The Cowboys have proven capable of producing points, averaging 24.6 per game, and have shown flashes of potential with an offense averaging 378.9 total yards per game. Running back Tevita Valeti, with 572 yards on the ground, rounds out Highlands' balanced offensive approach. However, the Cowboys' defense has allowed opponents 500 yards per game and given up 20 passing touchdowns, opening the door for Adams State to exploit gaps and potentially control the pace of the game.

Both teams have been plagued by turnovers, especially interceptions, which could prove pivotal on Saturday. Winning the turnover battle will be essential for Adams State to set up favorable field position and control momentum. Limiting mistakes, maintaining possession, and establishing a balanced offensive attack will be central to Adams State's strategy as the Grizzlies aim for a statement win.

The Grizzlies kickoff tomorrow at 5 p.m., at the Sanchez Family Stadium in Las Vegas, N.M.
