Grizzlies Come Up Short in High-Scoring Season Opener, Look Ahead to Falcons Clash

Box Score

Alamosa, Colo. – Adams State fell in its season opener to Western New Mexico University last Saturday at home, 46-36. The game, which took three and a half hours due to a lengthy weather delay, featured explosive offenses in the first half, but Western New Mexico pulled away late in the fourth quarter to secure the win.

The game opened with Western New Mexico's Jamon Chambers leading a 75-yard drive, capped by a 3-yard touchdown run to put the Mustangs up 7-0. Adams State responded quickly, as quarterback Chase Nelson connected with Daylen Boddie on a 74-yard run that set up Boddie's 1-yard rushing touchdown, cutting the deficit to 7-6. However, the Mustangs quickly regained control as Chambers broke free for an 18-yard rushing touchdown to extend the lead to 13-6 by the end of the first quarter.

In the second quarter, Adams State pieced together an 17-yard play, 88-yard drive that chewed up nearly eight minutes of clock. The drive was capped off with a 14-yard touchdown pass from Nelson to Kevin Johnson, tying the game at 13, a scoreline that held until halftime.

Western New Mexico came out strong after the break, with Chambers adding his third rushing touchdown of the night on a 1-yard run to reclaim the lead, 20-13. Adams State answered with another 1-yard touchdown run by Boddie after an 8-play, 75-yard drive, leveling the game once again at 20. Momentum quickly swung back in WNMU's favor when Zay Savoie sprinted for a 20-yard touchdown to give them a 27-20 lead by the end of the third quarter.

The fourth quarter saw an offensive explosion, with Western New Mexico pulling further ahead with a 21-yard field goal by Zach Gordon, followed shortly by a 2-yard touchdown run by Savoie. Gordon added a 47-yard field goal with 8:45 remaining to make it 39-20, seemingly putting the game out of reach.

Adams State refused to go down quietly, as Nelson hit Johnson for a 5-yard touchdown pass, followed by a successful two-point conversion that cut the deficit to 39-28. But the Mustangs responded swiftly, with Savoie finding the end zone for his third touchdown of the night to stretch the lead to 46-28 with just over three minutes left. Nelson and Boddie connected again on a 46-yard touchdown pass late in the game, bringing Adams state within 10 points at 46-36, but time ran out before a comeback could be mounted.

The Grizzlies are set to take on Texas-Permian Basin Saturday at 6 p.m. MT, at Astound Broadband Stadium in Midland, Texas. The Falcons enter the matchup 1-1 after a dominant win against Western New Mexico in their season opener in week 0 before falling to CSU-Pueblo in their second game.

The Falcons have been effective on both sides of the ball so far this season, averaging 32 points per game while holding opponents to 21.5. Their offense is balanced, with quarterback Dylan Graham leading the passing attack, having thrown for 607 yards and five touchdowns over two games. Graham's favorite target, Jeremiah Cooley, has racked up 205 yards and three touchdowns. On the ground, running back Kory Harris has rushed for 177 yards and two touchdowns.
