ALAMOSA, Colo. – The Adams State men's and women's cross-country teams competed at Cattail Golf Course on Saturday morning, with the Grizzlies winning the college division titles at the 31st running of the Joe I. Vigil meet. The men scored 27 points and the women scored 18.
The Adams State men claimed four of the top 10 finishes. Kidus Begashaw placed third with a time of 24:24.24. First and second place went to unattached athletes Dayton Brown (24:03.00) and Awet Beraki (24:12.82), respectively. Brown took the lead late after trailing the entire race to cross the finish line first. Brown finished fourth in last year's Joe I. Vigil meet.
Rounding out the top 10 for the Grizzlies were Juan Rosales in fifth place (24:35.85), David Cardenas in eighth (24:49.79), and David Milan in 10th (24:51.30).
Other Grizzlies finishers were Nathan Scherbarth in 11th (24:55.12), Emil Bezecny in 12th (25:05.46), Micah Swann in 17th (25:22.28), Tyman Smart in 18th (25:26.92), Andy Setser in 19th (25:27.89), and Zak Beckwith in 26th (25:39.32).
On the women's side, Adams State claimed five of the top 10 finishes. Maggie McCleskey, Emily Schoellkopf, and Katie Hughes took the top three spots. McCleskey, who placed 11th last year, finished first with a time of 17:12.12. Schoellkopf followed in second (17:27.19), and Hughes finished third (17:31.56). Precious Robinson placed fifth (17:38.39), while Elena Carey took seventh (17:53.41).
Other Adams State finishers were Morgan O'Keefe in 11th (18:06.79), Fiona Hawkins in 12th (18:25.52), Haley Harkrider in 18th (19:03.10), Lieke Hoogsteen in 19th (19:16.98), and Clara Keddy in 22nd (19:32.48).
The Grizzlies return to action Sept. 21 at the Metro State Roadrunner Invite in Denver.
