Comeback Attempt Falls Short Against Nevada, 69-64

Men's Basketball Puts Forth Strong Second Half Performance In Exhibition Loss

Box Score

RENO, Nevada (November 17, 2014)
– A pair of Shakir Smith free throws with 30 seconds left brought the Adams State University Grizzlies within two at 64-62 but an ensuing offensive rebound and a steal by the University of Nevada kept the Wolf Pack ahead in Monday night's exhibition contest from the Lawlor Events Center.

Nevada's Marqueze Coleman made good of four free throws in the final 12 seconds as Smith added a layup before the buzzer to bring the game to its final score of 69-64 in favor of the Wolf Pack.

The Grizzlies made it a close contest after a slow first half that included a 25 percent (4-16) shooting performance in the opening eight minutes of play. Nevada soon stretched their lead to double digits and entered halftime with a 35-24 advantage. For the opening stanza, Adams State struggled on the glass as Nevada grabbed 31 rebounds including 13 offensive boards. Producing for the Grizzlies were Smith and Travante Williams who combined for 19 of the team's 24 first half points.

The cold start disappeared as the second half presented an entirely different story line.

A revitalized ASU squad returned after the break to post a 24-18 rebounding edge. Michael Middlebrooks led the team's efforts with 10 rebounds after halftime. The senior forward would finish with 12 for the game and added 14 points in the exhibition loss.

The Grizzlies also outshot the Wolf Pack with a 41 percent (15-36) shooting mark from the floor that enabled ASU to climb back into the game. The change of momentum also translated into Adams State holding the edge in second chance points (18-8), fast break points (4-0), bench points (10-1), and points in the paint (20-12).

Smith led all players with 21 points while Williams added 14. Also reaching double digits was Marcus Hall with 10. D.J. Fenner paced Nevada with 18 points as AJ West added 17 points and a game-high 18 rebounds.

The Grizzlies return home for a Nov. 21 meeting with Langston University. Tip-off is slated for 7:30 p.m. from Plachy Hall Gym.
