ALAMOSA, Colo. (January 14, 2015) – Adams State University takes their four game winning streak on the road this weekend for Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (RMAC) tilts with Metropolitan State University of Denver and Regis University. The Grizzlies and Roadrunners are set for a 7:00 p.m. tip on Friday from the Auraria Event Center. ASU then wraps up the weekend on Saturday with a 5:00 p.m. start against the Rangers within the confines of the Regis Fieldhouse. Live video and stats will be made available by each host school along with live audio provided by KSPK.
Last Time OutA pair of convincing wins at home against Western New Mexico University and New Mexico Highlands University highlighted play for the Grizzlies last week. The two wins moved ASU to 5-4 in RMAC play and 8-4 overall which now positions the team in seventh place in the conference standings. The four game winning streak is the team's best stretch this season and is the program's best run since a 7-0 mark that elapsed nearly a month during the 2013-14 season.
In both games, every Grizzly on the active roster not only saw the court but scored as well. Adams State also finished with a 38 point average margin of victory. Against WNMU,
Shakir Smith paced the squad with 16 points as four others scored 10+ points.
Mikey Hope led the way the following night against NMHU with 17 points while shooting 4-of-6 from three-point range. In total, the ASU bench amassed an outstanding 121 combined points in the two wins.
About The RoadrunnersMetro State enters weekend play with a 12-3 overall mark and a 7-2 RMAC record. By virtue of receiving 124 points the Roadrunners are ranked 17
th in the latest NABC Coaches Top 25 poll. The team is coming off a 59-57 overtime buzzer-beater loss against the Colorado School of Mines on Jan. 10. The Roadrunners trailed by eight at halftime but surged late to force the overtime frame. However, Mines held the final possession and Caleb Waitsman made good of his jumper attempt at the buzzer for the win. Guard Mitch McCarron led Metro State with 27 points and eight rebounds while playing 44 minutes. The Roadrunners lead the league in scoring defense by allowing a mere 59.0 ppg. and are second in scoring margin at +14.9. A bulk of offensive production is sparked by forward Nicholas Kay (20.0 ppg.) and McCarron (19.9 ppg.) who rank fourth and fifth, respectively, in conference scoring.
About The RangersThe Rangers have lost four of their past five contests and hold a 4-9, 2-7 RMAC record. Scoring has been an issue for Regis who rank 11
th amongst RMAC teams at 63.8 ppg. Senior forward Brett Hartshorne leads the team with 12.3 ppg. The program's last win came at home against New Mexico Highlands on Jan. 3. Regis is under the direction of former Adams State All-American, and ASU Hall of Famer, Lonny Porter. Porter announced prior to the start of the season that the 2014-15 campaign would be his last as head coach. In 38 seasons he has 533 wins to his name and is the all-time winningest men's collegiate basketball coach in the state of Colorado.
Last We MetA season ago, Adams State went 2-0 vs. Regis but 0-2 against Metro State. In the final win against the Rangers,
Mike Hemsley led the Grizzlies to a 77-55 road win on 2/21/14. Hemsley recorded a double-double by way of 20 points and 14 rebounds. In an 88-77 defeat on 1/17/14 at home vs. Metro State,
Juwan Buchanan tallied 14 points with Hemsley and
Mikey Hope adding 14 and 13, respectively. The Roadrunners shot a robust 62 percent in the first half which placed ASU in an early deficit.
