Box Score DURANGO, Colo. (November 14th,2015)—The Skyhawk Regional Classic concluded earlier this afternoon with the Adams State University Grizzlies taking on the Westminster College Griffins at Fort Lewis College. The Grizzlies were unable to overcome a strong Griffins team, as they fell 66-28.
The Grizzlies were led by
Cydney McHenry who tallied nine points on the day.
Nicole Broyles was close behind with five points.
At the start of the first quarter, McHenry, off an assist by
Lena Jaycox, helped the Grizzlies take a one-point lead with her three-pointer. The Griffins would quickly regain the lead with four unanswered points. However, Ariana Barnes would net a three-pointer to give the Grizzlies another one-point lead at 6-5. McHenry would add two more points with a jump shot at 4:57 to give Adams State a three-point lead. With a free-throw from
Lauren McDonald, the Grizzlies would go up by four, but Westminster would start to take control with three unanswered points. At the end of the first, the Griffins had a four-point lead over Adams State.
The second quarter of play saw Jaycox cut the lead down to two with her jump shot off of an assist by
Amber Tso to 16-14, but Westminster would incur a foul that would allow them to maintain the lead by three at 17-14. McDonald brought the Grizzlies within two, but Westminster would go on a six-point streak that would bring the score to 25-15 late in the second.
Heading into halftime, the score would be 34-16.
The third quarter of play saw Jaycox and McHenry earn three-points between them to put the score at 36-19, but unfortunately the Griffins would net a three-point shot. The third period would see Westminster take their biggest lead of the game thus far with the score at 52-22.
The final stanza of the game started out with the Griffins adding three more points to their lead. Leja Hadzialijagic would net both of her free throws to make the score 57-24, with Broyles adding two more to the Grizzlies' score. McDonald would net the final two points for Adams State. From there, Westminster would add nine more points to end the game.
Overall the Grizzlies finished 9-61 (14.8%) from the field, 2-21 (9.5%) from the three-point line, and 8-17 (47.1%) from the free throw line. Westminster was 18-64 (39.1%) from the field, 9-23 (39.1%) from the three-point line, and 21-25 (84%) from the free-throw line.
The Grizzlies will take to the court again on December 2
