Box Score ALAMOSA, Colo. (December 2, 2015)—Adams State University added their first regular season win of the season in the form of a 75-71 decision against Northern New Mexico College
on Wednesday from Plachy Hall.
The Grizzlies (1-2) won
tonight thanks to the spectacular performance put in by guard
Cydney McHenry. McHenry was a dominant force on both ends of the court this evening, leading the team offensively with a game-high 25 points off of 8-23 shooting, 4-13 from beyond the three-point line. She also led the team in rebounds with nine and assists with four. Eighteen of McHenry's points came in the first half of regulation. Guard
Lena Jaycox also put in solid showing as well, shooting 4-6 from three-point range to finish with 15 points.
ASU started the game quick, obtaining the first tip-off and cashing in on quick layup from Jaycox to secure the game's first points. With a fast paced offense orchestrated by McHenry, the Grizzlies were able to use a stifling defense to silence the Eagle attack. So far throughout the young season, NNMC has relied heavily on the conversion of three point shots to win games followed by solid offensive performances put in by guard Demetria Clichee. Coming in to
tonight's game, she was the Eagle's leading scorer. In the first half she was held scoreless, shooting 0-6 from the field and 0-2 from downtown.
Using a 43.2 (19-44) percent conversion rate from shots from the field along with converting 46.7 (7-15) from shots beyond the three-point line, the Grizzlies quickly entered half time with a17 point lead. The Grizzlies led 45-28 after one half of play.
Mid way through the third quarter, the Grizzlies increased their led by as many as 24 points after two successful free throws by
Erin Stanford. However after closing the third quarter on a 12-6 run over the visiting Eagles, the fourth quarter witnessed the Grizzly lead disappear. Foul trouble and empty possessions allowed NNMC to score 28 points in the fourth quarter compared to the Grizzly 10. With less than a minute left in the game, the Eagles closed the gap within three after a successful three point shot from Clichee. After being held scoreless in the first half, Clichee erupted on the scene with 22 points in the second, mainly in part to shooting 4-9 from downtown paired with 10-12 shooting from the charity stripe.
Fortunately the Grizzlies were able to survive thanks to clutch free throw shooting from
Lena Jaycox, who put the game out of reach with two successful shots. At the end of regulation, the Grizzlies were victorious over the visiting Eagles.
For the game, the Grizzlies converted on 33.8 percent of their shots (24-71) compared to the Eagles 32.3 percent (21-65).
After the game Head Coach
Larry Joe Hunt commented "I felt we played three very good quarters of basketball. We had a spell of eight empty possessions at the start of the fourth quarter which hurt us. We will learn from that moving forward. I thought we showed some guts by hanging on in the end."
The Grizzlies snag their firs twin of the season with
tonight's results and will play
against Fort Lewis College on Saturday (December 5) at 5:30 pm from Plachy Hall next. Live stats will be accessible for fans by following www.asugrizzlies.com
