ALAMOSA, Colo. (February 21, 2015) — In the last home game of the season, the Adams State University Grizzlies women's basketball team saved their best performance of the season for last. On Senior Day,
Desiree Anderson and
Brittney Whiteman were sent off correctly due to the heroic showcase of abilities from freshman guard
J'nae Squires-Horton. Adams State secured victory in the closing seconds of the game after Squires-Horton successfully splashed a three point basket to give the Grizzlies an 86-84 victory with only two seconds left remaining in regulation. The Grizzlies close out the weekend by beating the visiting Metropolitan State University of Denver Roadrunners and improve their record on the season to 4-20, 4-16 in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (RMAC) play. Metro State, who has been on the losing end of six of their last nine games, drop to 13-11 while being 10-10 in conference play. In the process, the Grizzlies snap a five game losing streak and gain much needed momentum for the next road RMAC matchup against Colorado Mesa University (Feb.27)
Offensively the Grizzlies were led by Squires-Horton who had a career-best 29 points total in tonight's affair. She was a coach's worst nightmare and was practically unstoppable with her extremely high shooting efficiency rate. From the field she converted 10-17 of her shots and was 6-11 with shots beyond the three point line. In the final minutes of regulation with MSUD leading 79-72, Squires-Horton converted three straight shots from downtown to conclude the comeback. The final shot by Squires-Horton was set up by a missed jumper from
Desiree Anderson that was rebounded from
Sabra Ross, who then cashed in the assist to steal the victory from the Roadrunners.
Lena Jaycox also was highly influential in the showdown against Metro State as well by having nine assists.
In her last home appearance for the green and black,
Desiree Anderson totaled 20 points from 7-22 shooting; while being 6-15 from beyond the arc.
To close out the game, the Grizzlies went on a 14-5 run. Offensively, the Roadrunners were led by Deni Jacobs who scored 21 points. For the game the Grizzlies converted 38.6% (32-83) of their shots against the Roadrunners 44.6% (25-56). The Grizzlies shot a season high 43 three point shot attempts and were able to convert 15 of the shots, good for a 34.9% conversion rate. They now prepare for a road battle against the Colorado Mesa University Mavericks (Feb. 27) in Grand Junction, Colo. for a scheduled tip off at 5:30 p.m. Live stats, video, and audio will be made accessible for fans.
