MLAX| Grizzlies tame Thunderwolves 19-8

Box Score PUEBLO, COLO (March 11, 2015)— A new era has arrived for the Adams State University Men's Lacrosse team, as the Grizzlies captured their first win of the 2015 campaign, which doubled as Head Coach Jason Levesque's first win at the helm as they defeated Colorado State University-Pueblo 19-8 on Wednesday night.

The first quarter saw the Thunderwolves come out strong with three shots against ASU's Chris Bucciarelli, but they were unable to capitalize as the Grizzlies netted the first goal of the game from John Beedle , at 12:03. Quickly after, Seth Stowell scored the second goal off a Josh Peterman assist at 12:02. In what was shaping up to be a Grizzly- dominated quarter, Danny Mayes netted his fourth of the season at 10:13 to make the score 3-0 ASU.

However, at 9:15, CSUP netted their first goal of the game with Kelton Himmelberg making the first move for the Thunderwolves. Almost a minute later, Mayes scored again to make the score 4-1 in favor for Adams State. Keeping up with the fast pace of the scoring, ASU's Peterman netted the fifth goal for the Grizzlies at 7:16.

With Adams State up by three, Pueblo decreased the lead back to two with Jamil Modaffari scoring off of an assist by Justin Held at 7:03. The Grizzlies would gain back that point at 3:57 left in the quarter with Nick Bagatti netting his first goal of the season, and the sixth goal of the game for ASU. Peterman would then score at 2:49 to give Adams State a five- goal cushion heading into the second quarter.

The second quarter would see lots of action from both sides of the field, with plays coming from offense and defense. The first goal came late in the second at 6:05, when Stowell would find the net and make the score 8-2.

The next goal would come not even a minute later, with Bagatti scoring ASU's ninth goal of the contest at 5:34. Bagatti would also net the next goal at 3:28 to give Adams State a 10-2 lead.

Mayes would again score at 1:43 to bring the score to 11-2 heading into the half.

The start of the second quarter would see John Beedle score at 13:55 to create a ten-point cushion for the Grizzlies.

Stowell would then add to that cushion at 10:48, to make the score 13-2. The Thunderwolves would then score their third goal of the game at 9:58 with Modaffari scoring his second goal of the contest, to make the score 13-3.

With 7:05 left in the third quarter, Peterman would score his third of the game to give the Grizzlies an eleven- point lead.

After a turnover caused by the Grizzlies, CSUP was able to capitalize and score at 5:19 with Tyler Goodwin making the score 14-4 heading into the fourth quarter.

To start the fourth quarter, the Grizzlies took a penalty that allowed the Thunderwolves to capitalize off of an extra man opportunity with Chas Welch and Modaffari teaming up for CSUP's fifth goal of the game.

The Grizzlies would get that goal back at 10:20 with Alex Brydson scoring his first goal of the game to create another ten-point deficit.

The Thunderwolves would respond back at 6:21 with Modaffari and Nick Cervi teaming up to make the score 15-6.

CSUP would then take a penalty that would afford the Grizzlies a man-up opportunity that would see Mayes score his fourth goal of the game, and bring the Grizzlies to a 16-6 lead at 5:09.

Adams State would again get a man-up opportunity that would allow Beedle and Peterman team up to net the Grizzlies' seventeenth point of the game.

Under a minute later, Bagatti would net his fourth of the contest off of a Brydson assist. The score would be 17-6 for ASU.

With 3:31 left in the game, the Thunderwolves' Hunter Thompson would score his first of the game to bring the score to 18-7.

Adams State's last goal would come at 2:33, as they were a man down. Colton Long would score his first goal of the season off of an assist by Derek Bill.  With only 51 seconds left in the game, the Thunderwolves' Cody Bolen would get the last goal of the game to make the score 18-9.

"I think we had some good energy in the first quarter, the second was a little bit of a see saw and the second half was again a little bit inconsistent at times for my liking.  Overall, a win is a win, a evening up the conference record at 1-1 is great.  However, as I told the guys post game, while the scoreboard shows in our favor, we cannot be satisfied or happy with our overall game.  We committed far too many turnovers and gave them too many quality looks at the goal on our own mistakes.  We need to correct those miscues in a hurry as our schedule picks and play more of a consistent game from start to finish."  Said Head Coach Jason Levesque after the win.

The Grizzlies will take to the field again on Sunday March 15, 2015 at 12:00 pm at home against Rockhurst University. Fans can follow along with live stats.
