MLAX| Grizzlies drop close game to Brewers 14-12

Box Score COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (March 17, 2015)—With the Adams State University Grizzlies leading at the half, the Vassar College Brewers came back in the third quarter with a surge of goals that ended up boosting Vassar over ASU 14-12.

The first quarter opened up with the Brewers' Liam Moriarty drawing the first blood of the game just thirty-three seconds into the contest. Moriarty then scored the second goal of the game only seconds later to give Vassar an early 2-0 lead.

Nick Bagatti, who was recently named the Western Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association Offensive Player of the Week, netted the Grizzlies' first goal of the game at 12:14, off of an assist by Danny Mayes.

Vassar would strike back with Moriarty netting his hat-trick goal, with an assist by Scott Brenke at 5:10 to bring the lead back to two for the Brewers.

Adams State would get that goal back as just over a minute later, Josh Peterman off an assist by Seth Stowell, would bring the score to 3-2.

The Grizzlies would score two more unanswered goals with Mayes (assist by Jamison Bobo) at 2:36 and John Beedle (assist by Peterman) with fourty-four seconds left in the quarter to give the Grizzlies a one- goal lead at 4-3.

However, the game would be tied at four, due to a last second goal by Brenke off an assist by Noah Parson.

The second quarter saw the Grizzlies take control of the game as they scored three more unanswered goals, while keeping the Brewers' at bay, and not allowing them to score a single goal. All three of ASU's goals would come from Beedle (unassisted), which would allow him a hat-trick. The score at the half was 7-4, as Beedle single- handedly gave the Grizzlies a three- point lead over Vassar.

The tables would quickly turn though, as the Brewers managed to go on a seven goal run, which saw them open the quarter with a man- up opportunity off of an ASU penalty. Parson would kick off the surge of goals with a Chris Billups' assist at 13:37. From there, the Brewers would see three goals by Billups (assists by Dyland Staub, Parson, and Brandon DeStasio), a goal from Brenke (unassisted), Parson (assist by Moriarty), and Shane Flattery.

Adams State would try and set the pace to get control back with Stowell (assist by Bobo) capitalizing off of a Vassar penalty that would allow the ASU a man-up opportunity, to bring the score to 11-8 with 3:17 left in the quarter.  Peterman would give the Grizzlies another goal with twelve seconds left, and the score going into the final stanza was 11-9.
"We were flat in the first and flat in the third.  We did not play well overall, not even close to a decent game.  We made a play or two here and there to keep ourselves in the game from a scoreboard standpoint, but as a whole it wasn't pretty.  The turnovers, most of which were unforced, and the defensive lapses we made should not be occurring at this point in the season.  I know we're better than we showed today, I know our guys can perform and execute at a higher level, however today we were absolutely brutal." Said Grizzlies' Head Coach Jason Levesque on ASU's play during the opening and third quarters.

Beedle would get the ball rolling for Adams State by scoring the first goal of the fourth quarter (11:26) to put the Grizzlies back within one of Vassar.

The Brewers' would counteract that goal with Billups off of an assist by Matthew Altman at 10:53 to put Vassar back up by two.

The Grizzlies and the Brewers would trade goals, as Mayes would cut the lead back to one (9:15), but a goal by Parson (assist DeStasio) would again give the Brewers a two-point lead (7:46)

With 3:54 left in the game, Vassar would strike again with Altman scoring his first goal of the contest and bringing the score to 14-11.

Stowell would score the Grizzlies' last goal at 2:30, whch would put the final score the game at 14-12.

The Grizzlies are preparing for a four- game road trip that will see them take to the field in Florida against four different opponents.

"With four extremely tough opponents two time zones away in a span of six days, things don't get easy for us.  Myself and our staff, we need to figure out how to bring that higher level of play out of our guys.   We need to be better and we need to be better right away." Said Levesque of the upcoming games.

The Grizzlies will face off against Rollins College (March 21, 2015) at 11:00 p.m (eastern) in Winter Park, FLA. They will then take on Florida Southern College on March 22, 2015 at 3 p.m (eastern) in Lakeland, FLA.

The Grizzlies will get one day of rest, as they will then face Saint Leo University on March 24, 2015 at 7:00 p.m. (eastern), and then finish the trip with a game against the University of Tampa on March 26, 2015 at 7:00 p.m. (eastern).
