Box Score ALAMOSA, Colo. (March 7, 2015)—The Adams State University Grizzlies women's lacrosse team opened up their season Saturday at home against the Colorado Mesa University Mavericks.
The game got off to a great start for the Grizzlies as
Aislinn Stace netted the first goal of the game at 27:34, off an assist by
Kates Raymond. Shortly after, goalie
Danica Kristiansen was able to block a CMU free position shot that was a result of an Adams State penalty. However, ASU made a costly turnover, as Maverick's Olivia Porcaro was able to tie the game at one (25:39). Following this, the Grizzlies took another penalty that resulted in a goal by Ashley Eickhoff at 20:25 off of a free position shot to make the score 2-1. Adams State was unable to tame the Mavericks as just over two minutes later, CMU struck again with Jenny Lange and Jessica Cook teaming up for the goal and assist to give the Mavericks a two goal cushion. The next two minutes saw Colorado Mesa dominate with two back- to- back groundball pick-ups and a goal by Lydia Furrow at 15:50 to create a three- goal deficit for the Grizzlies. However, after a draw control by Quiana Barfield,
Heather Jones scored a goal (15:14) to cut the lead in half. Stace struck again at 13:20 to nab her second goal of the half, and to cut the Mavericks' lead down to one. After calling a timeout, CMU came back into the contest with Porcaro scoring her second goal at 11:14. Back up by two, CMU's Hannah Payton netted her first goal off an assist from teammate Jenny Lange just over a minute later. With a three- goal lead, the Mavericks again took control with Megan Gromke scoring at 9:56. Two minutes later, the Grizzlies again cut the lead to three after the Mavericks scored on their own net. After a goalie change for CMU, the Grizzlies used the momentum to create a free position shot, that later resulted in
Kendra Cheda scoring at 6:24 and bringing the score to 7-5. The Grizzlies and the Mavericks went back and forth on both sides of the field, but were unable to prevent CMU' s Lange from scoring her second goal of the game off an assist by Keri Kopchik at 4:42 left in the first half. To end the first half, CMU's Eickhoff picked up a yellow card at 44 seconds.
Only 18 seconds in to the second half, Stace pounced again off a Barfield draw control win to net her third goal of the game to make the score 8-6. However, the Mavericks' answered back only 15 seconds later with Gomke scoring her second goal of the game and bringing the CMU lead back to three. Shortly after, the Mavericks scored again at 23:28, with Lange netting her third goal of the game to make the score 11-6. Almost a minute later CMU's Jessica Cook netted her first goal to give the Mavericks a six- goal cushion. The Grizzlies took another costly penalty off of a draw control that saw Shannon Lynch scoring her first goal of the game off of a free position shot. Once again, the Mavericks were able to add on to a commanding lead with Lange scoring her fourth goal at 21:00 off of an assist by Kayla Lyall to make the score 14-6, giving the Mavericks their highest lead of the game. The Mavericks continued to dominate as Lynch and Lange teamed up for Lynch's second goal of the contest at 17:03, making the score 15-6. However, the Grizzlies were able to avoid the running time clock rule, where the clock will remain running if a team is down by ten goals, as Cheda scored her second goal of the game at 13:32. Keeping up with the back and forth scoring though, the Mavericks' Kopchik netted her first goal of the game at 12:37 with a Genevive Giasante assist to bring the deficit back to nine. The Grizzlies would go down by ten at 9:21 as Furrow and Giasante teamed up for Furrow's second goal of the game. The Grizzlies answered back with a Barfield draw control win that resulted in
Jessica Hammer scoring her first goal of the game at 8:16. Adams State then took a timeout, but couldn't quite stop the charging Mavericks as Lynch and Lyall once again teamed up for Lynch's third goal at 6:38 left in the game. Adams State did not give up, as after a groundball picked up by
Samantha Teti, and a clear attempt that was good, Cheda netted her third goal of the game at 4:30. The last two minutes of the game were pretty evenly matched, but unfortunately the Grizzlies fell 18-9.
"The girls came out strong and fought the entire game. We learned a lot from our first game and are excited to head into the rest of our season!" Said head coach
