WLAX| Grizzlies capitalize in overtime for first win of season

Box Score ALAMOSA, Colo. (April 17,2015)— In what was a very exciting back and forth battle on Senior Day, the Adams State University Grizzlies Women's Lacrosse team came out victorious nabbing their first win of the season in overtime fashion, as they defeated the Colorado State University-Pueblo ThunderWolves   13-12this afternoon at Rex Stadium.

Heather Jones was honored for her time as a Grizzly. Jones tallied 33 goals through out her four years, and was named captain by the team. Jones was also a starting attacker all four years, and plans to continue her education at University of Nebraska- Omaha to get her Masters in athletic training.

The overtime period saw both teams come out fighting for the win and displayed a lot of excitement for the Grizzly fans. Samantha Hammer was the hero of the game with her game-winning goal with just 1:37 left in overtime.  CSUP tried hard to counteract that goal, but were stonewalled.

The first half saw the ThunderWolves score the first two goals of the season to take an early 2-0 lead over ASU. The Grizzlies got one back at 14:14 as Jessica Hammer found the net to cut the ThunderWolves' lead to 2-1.

CSUP would then net another two goals, but Kendra Cheda would cut the score in half to 4-2 at 11:32 off of a free position shot. Two minutes later, Qiana Barfield would bring the Grizzlies to within one of the ThunderWolves with her goal at 9:51. Seconds later, Cheda would find the net for her second goal of the game and tie the game up at 4-4.

The next minute would see CSUP net two more, to once again take a two-goal lead over Adams State.  At 5:22 Kates Raymond would break the streak to net her first goal of the game off of a free-position shot to bring the Grizzlies back to within one at 6-5.

The ThunderWolves would score another two goals to bring the score to 8-5 and give themselves a three-goal cushion over Adams State.

The start of the second half saw Cheda net her third goal of the game at 26:47 to close the gap to two-goals and put the Grizzlies down 8-6. A minute later, Samantha Hammer would net her first goal of the game off of a free position shot to once again put the Grizzlies down by one.

At 19:38, Cheda would score her fourth goal of the game to tie the game up at 8-8. Barfield would then net her second goal at 14:20 off of a free-position shot to give the Grizzlies their first lead of the game at 9-8.

The ThunderWolves would get that goal back though to tie the game up at 9-9. The back and forth battle would commence with Aislinn Stace netting her first goal at 8:47 and put the Grizzlies up 10-9. CSUP would counteract that goal at 7:53 to once again tie the game up.

With just 2:15 left in the contest, the ThunderWolves scored on their own net to give the Grizzlies a 11-10 lead.

Fourteen seconds later, CSUP would redeem themselves and tie the game up 11-11. With just twenty seconds left to go, Samantha Hammer found the net again for her second goal of the game with Adams State a man-up to give the Grizzlies their last lead of the game at 12-11.

Or so they thought.  With just one second left on the clock, the ThunderWolves scored and tied the game up at 12-12 to take the game into overtime.

With his win, Adams State can add their first win of the 2015 campaign under fourth year Head Coach Mariana DiGiovanni.
