Western New Mexico University and New Mexico Highlands University Preview

ALAMOSA, Colo. (February 18, 2016)— Adams State University will return back to Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (RMAC) action this weekend for two away games in the state of New Mexico. The Grizzlies will square off against the Western New Mexico University Mustangs on Friday Feb. 19 and the New Mexico Highlands University Cowgirls on Saturday Feb. 20.
 
Last Time Out
In the Grizzlies' last on court appearance, Head Coach Larry Joe Hunt and his team earned their first victory since the week before Christmas. The Grizzlies beat the Western State Colorado University by a 68-64 score behind career nights from Cydney McHenry and Arianna Barnes.  The victory against WSCU ended the Grizzlies fourteen-game consecutive losing streak within the conference. McHenry who scored a career-high 22 points paced the Grizzlies, while Barnes chipped in a career-high 19 points as well.  The duo combined for 41 of the Grizzlies 68 points.
 
About the Western New Mexico University Mustangs (8-17, 5-14 RMAC)
The Mustangs are currently ranked fifth within the RMAC's Mountain Division and are riding a two-game losing streak heading into Friday's matchup. WNMU has struggled to win games at home this season. The Mustangs hold a 3-8 from within the confines of Drag's Court. Away from their home court, the Mustangs are 5-8.
 
WNMU has the 14th best offense from a statistical standpoint within the conference.  On average, the Mustangs score 57 points per game.  Junior guard Jordan Gutierrez is the teams leading scorer who averages 10 ppg. 
 
About the New Mexico Highlands University Cowgirls (3-20, 1-18 RMAC)
The Cowgirls are currently in last place within Mountain Division of the conference and are riding a seven-game losing streak. Their last victory came against Adams State on the Jan. 22 meeting at Plachy Hall The Cowgirls left Alamosa with a 51-49 victory, holding off a furious Grizzly comeback to secure their only victory within the conference this season. The Grizzlies trailed by as many 20 points heading into the fourth quarter and trimmed the NMHU lead to three points with less then a minute left in regulation.
 
NMHU has the 12th best offense within the RMAC. On average the team scores 59.3 points per game and are led offensively by Michelle Traynham.  The junior guard is the RMAC's fourth best leading scorer, with an average of 15.1 ppg. Traynham is one of the best pure-shooters within the RMAC and is exceptional from downtown. Defensively the Cowgirls have the 15th ranked defense, that allows on average 72.2 ppg.
