WBB| CSU-Pueblo & New Mexico Highlands Preview

ALAMOSA, Colo. (January 31st, 2017) – The Adams State University women's basketball team is on the road this weekend to face Colorado State Pueblo on Friday night at 5:30pm and New Mexico Highlands on Saturday at 5:30pm.

Recently For Adams State Women's Basketball:
It has been a tough time for Grizzly women's basketball this season. Last Saturday's 93-64 loss to Colorado Mines has put the team on their longest losing streak in program history at 15. Luckily, one of this weekend's games should provide an opportunity to end this misery.

About Colorado State Pueblo:
The ThunderWolves are one of the best teams in all of Division II and would likely be competitive in a Division I conference. CSU-Pueblo comes into Friday's matchup at 21-0 (15-0 RMAC) and nationally ranked No. 4 at the time of this article. A new batch of rankings this afternoon may push them into the top 2 or 3. The only blemish on their schedule is an 8 point loss to three-time defending Mountain West Champion, Colorado State of Division I and Utah State of the same conference. Those games did not count against the ThunderWolves due to the nature of them being exhibition games. The team is not invincible by any means, having had several close calls within the RMAC. It took overtime to escape an average Black Hills State game in early January, and the Pack only came away with a 2 point victory against an average South Dakota Mines squad in early January as well. They have been a little better lately however, winning their last six games by an average of nearly 20 points. Molly Rohrer is averaging 16 points per games while adding 4.7 rebounds to lead the team.

Last Meeting: The teams previously played on December 3rd, 2016 while the ThunderWolves were ranked 12th. The game was not really a blowout as some may have predicted, though CSU-Pueblo did come away with the 61-45 win. In that game, the Grizzlies were within 10 points entering the fourth period. Unfortunately, the ThunderWovles pulled away on an 18-12 run to end any ASU upset attempt.

About New Mexico Highlands:
The Cowgirls are an RMAC bottom dweller as well, and may provide the Grizzlies their best chance to get a conference win this season. NMHU comes in at 2-16 (1-14 RMAC) this season, which puts them one spot above the Grizzlies in the RMAC standings. Kaylani Maiava is the leader for the Cowgirls with 13.5 points per game.

Last Meeting: While this should be a good opportunity to get in the win column for Adams, the Cowgirls did win the December 2nd, 2016 matchup in Alamosa 77-62. That night, it looked like the Grizzlies had an early advantage in the first period. The Cowgirls then went on a 17-4 run that Adams would never recover from.

Looking Ahead: After this weekend the Grizzlies have an upcoming home stand. Next Friday the Grizzlies host Colorado Mesa, followed by Western State on Saturday, and finally Colorado Christian on February 17th to finish out the teams home schedule for the year.
