ALAMOSA, Colo. – The Adams State Women's Soccer team will begin conference play this weekend against Regis University on Friday, Sept. 14 and Black Hills State University on Sunday, Sept. 16.
The Grizzlies came up short at home this past weekend losing to West Texas A&M University, 3-1, and Eastern New Mexico University, 2-1.
The Grizzlies home opener got off to a fast start when Diana Cerrillo found the back of the net to put the Grizzlies on top early in the first half. The Lady Buffs scored a goal of their own before halftime to knot things up at 1-all. In the second half, the Lady Buffs continued to push the offensive attack by scoring two more goals to seal the victory. For the Grizzlies, Eli Zimmer and Chloe Cook led the team in shots with two apiece. Goalkeeper, Corri Zaiger, had eight saves in net for the Grizzlies.
The Grizzlies following game was a close contest as the Grizzlies fell by one, 2-1. The first half went scoreless as both teams combined for 17 shots. Goalkeeper, Corri Zaiger, had six saves for the Grizzlies going into halftime. In the beginning of the second half, the Greyhounds scored first on a 40 yard strike by Victoria Nunez. Minutes later, the Grizzlies countered with a goal of their own off of an Eva Riggs header to tie the game. The Greyhounds broke the tie and wrapped up the victory when Anahi Hernandez scored in the 71st minute. The Greyhounds posted 28 total shots with 12 on goal. The Grizzlies had 10 shots with five being on goal. Kendall Weld and Diana Cerillo combined for three shots on goal, while Zaiger grabbed 10 saves in net. The loss dropped the Grizzlies to 1-3.
The Grizzlies offense ranks as one of the most powerful in the conference. The Grizzlies are top three in the conference in points, goals, goals per game, assists, and saves. Zaiger leads the RMAC in saves with 30.
Scouting the Rangers
The Rangers are fresh off of a 2017 RMAC championship last season. Currently, the Rangers sit at 1-1-2. They have struggled to find a way to score after being shut out in their last three of four games. However, the Rangers have only allowed one goal in their first four games. Goalkeeper, Julia Coombs has 17 saves out of 18 attempts. She is currently third in the RMAC in save percentage and first in shutouts. Offensively, Keegan Storlie and Cat Devitt each have scored a goal for the Rangers. Emily Ramos leads the team in assists with two.
Scouting the Yellow Jackets
The Yellow Jackets are still searching for their first win after losing in their first five games. They haven't had much success on the offensive side as they have been shutout in four of their first five games. Mikayla Hernandez leads the offense with the Yellow Jackets lone three goals of the season. Hernandez had a hat trick in a game against the University of Mary on Sept. 6. Hernandez is tied for second in the RMAC in goals.
