Santa Fe, NM. Pueblo, CO. – The Adams State Women's soccer team hits the ground running this weekend to face off against New Mexico Highlands in Santa Fe for their first away game of the weekend. Following, the team will travel to play against CSU-Pueblo for their last game of the regular season.
ASU Women's Soccer
The Grizzlies will finish their last weekend of regular season play on the road against New Mexico Highlands and CSU-Pueblo. Most recently Grizzlies faced off against Colorado Mesa and Western Colorado in a disappointing conclusion to their home schedule.
Kicking off their last homestand last weekend, they faced off against the Mavericks in a Friday afternoon game. Though the game resulted in an 0-2 loss, it was a well-played game by the Grizzlies defense and goalie who stood tall behind their offense. Following the Friday matchup was a Sunday morning matchup against Western Colorado. Sunday's game was action-packed with possession bouncing back and forth constantly in the first until the Grizzlies began to dominate possession in the second. Despite some nail-biting scenarios which included a laser of a shot from
Maya Mau that bounced off the cross bar, the Grizzlies took a tough 0-1 loss against the Mountaineers. On top of Mau's shot, her teammates put plenty of shots on goal all of them searching for their first goal of the season. With how well they began to play against the Mountaineers, it wouldn't be too much of a surprise if some girls get their first goals this weekend on the road. The Grizzlies began to show what they were truly capable of by utilizing their defensive backbone and putting in maximum effort in the last half of the Western game. If they carry that play into this weekend, there is no doubt that there will be some close and tough games to keep an eye on.
Scouting New Mexico Highlands
New Mexico Highlands will be heading into their own homestand with an overall record of 0-13 and a conference record of 0-11. New Mexico recently had a weekend of away games where they headed to Dixie State and Westminster for a pair of games. Highlands took a 1-10 loss against Dixie State in a Friday evening matchup and a 0-5 loss against Westminster in a Sunday afternoon game. New Mexico has had a rough season, but they look to turn it around during their homestand against Adams and Fort Lewis College. Leading the Cowgirls into the weekend is senior Janis Martinez who has 4 goals under her belt for the team and the most minutes on the field. The Cowgirls will look to have a bounce back weekend much like the Grizzlies will be.
Scouting CSU-Pueblo
Similar to the Cowgirls, the Thunderwolves traveled to play against Westminster College and Dixie State University. The Thunderwolves began the weekend away with a tightly knit Friday afternoon game against Westminster. Pueblo started off strong by scoring two goals against the Eagles in the first half, but in the second half the Eagles pulled off a comeback by scoring two unanswered goals as well. The game went into a nail-biting double overtime matchup that ended in a 2-2 tie. Following their Friday game, CSU headed to Dixie State for a Sunday game. Unfortunately for CSU-Pueblo, after a close first half the Trailblazers pulled away in the second and handed CSU a 3-6 loss. Three key offensive players have led the Thunderwolves offense: Madison Jepperson (6G, 3A), Justine Martinez (4G, 3A), and Cara Siegel (3G, 4A). The three have helped CSU-Pueblo achieve their current 6-7-2 overall record (5-4-2 RMAC) and look to better their record this weekend.
Going into their last weekend of regular play the Adams State Women's soccer team sits at an overall record of 3-11 with a conference record of 1-10. The team will look to end their season on a high note by defeating the Cowgirls and Thunderwolves.
