Grizzlies Head to Land of Enchantment for Four-Game Series

ALAMOSA, Colo. - Fresh off a four-game series in Texas, Adams State Baseball is back on the road this weekend for a four-game series. The Grizzlies will head to Hobbs, N.M. as they remain on the road for the third straight week.

WHEN: Friday, Feb.15 (DH) - 12 & 3 p.m.
             Saturday, Feb. 16 (DH) - 12 & 3 p.m.

First Pitch
• Adams State continues its road trip for the third straight week, this time against an NAIA opponent in University of the Southwest. 
• The Grizzlies are coming of a 0-4 weekend at No. 10 West Texas A&M. The Grizzlies led in a pair of games but suffered two late rallies by the home team.
• At 0-7 overall, Adams State will look secure its first win of the season as they will play a doubleheader on Friday, Feb. 15 and Saturday, Feb. 16, respectively.
• The Grizzlies will remain on the road next weekend as they head to Texas again for a three-game series at UT Permian Basin.

Adams State Baseball History

• Grizzlies Baseball begins its seventh season as an NCAA sport. The program was re-instituted prior to the 2013 season after a 35 year hiatus.
• Prior to the 2013, Adams State last sponsored baseball in 1976 season when the program was still a member of the NAIA.
• Adams State enjoyed quite a bit of success winning back-to-back RMAC championships in 1973 and 1974.
• The Grizzlies posted the best overall record in the conference in each of the last four years (1973-76) while sponsoring the sport before it was discontinued.

The Capra File
• Head Coach James Capra has led the Grizzlies Baseball in each of the last six seasons. Coach Capra is a graduate of Adams State (Class of 1980).
• Coach Capra was a member of the 1976 team before it was cut. He also played football for three seasons at Adams State and was a three-year starter at wide receiver.

Last Time Out
• The Grizzlies went 0-4 against the West Texas A&m Buffs on the road. they dropped the series opener, 14-1, as the Buffs used a seven-run fifth inning to help them end the game early.
• Game two was originally suppose to go to seven but needed extra innings as Adams State nearly pulled off the upset in a 6-5 loss in nine innings.
• Game three was the second game of a doubleheader and the Buffs secured a no-hitter against the Grizzlies en route to a 12-0 shutout.
• Game four was another close one that almost was an upset. Adams State jumped out to a 5-0 lead early on but a late Buffs rally in the eighth inning propelled them a 8-5 win and the series sweep.

Batter Up!
• Three Grizzlies continue to bat over .300 going into the third weekend of the season. Nico Nintze sits atop the list at a .429 batting average. He also tops the team in slugging percentage at .810.
• Also batting over .400 for Adams State is Logan Bistrup at .407 to sit second on the team. Bistrup is slugging .741 and both he and Nintze lead the team in triples with two apiece.
• Jared Gay is the third leading hitter with a .348 batting average. Both he and Ninzte lead the team in home runs with one apiece.
• Leading the way in RBI are Gay and Nintze with four each, respectively. Bistrup is right behind the duo with three.
• Jake Angelopulos and Paul Giglio are just under .300 as both batters are hitting .250 going into the weekend. Giglio has two RBI, while Angelopulos has scored four runs.
• Bistrup, Nintze, and Gay have the most runs scored for the team with a combined 28. Bistrup tops the list with 11. Nintze is at nine, while Gay has eight.

On the Mound
• Reliever Kolton Bleggi has the top ERA for the Grizzlies at 1.42. He has appeared in two games and pitched 6.1 innings. He has struck out seven batters and allowed two runs this season.
• Starters Daniel Brennan and Dalton Carleo are tied for second in ERA for the Grizzlies. Both pitchers sport a 7.27 ERA. Brennan is the team leader in strikeouts with 10. 
• Troy Gutbub has the second most strikeouts for Adams State with nine.

Road Warriors
• The Grizzlies are one the road for their first 14 games on the road before playing a single game on their home turf.
• Adams State will play a total of 30 games on the road this season and 20 games at home.

Scouting University of the Southwest
• The Mustangs enter the weekend just one game under .500 with a 4-5 record. They were 3-1 before dropping a 3-1 series against McPherson College last weekend. They are coming off a 4-3 loss at UT Permian Basin. They have lost their last four games.
• Micah Tambur is the Grizzlies top hitter with a .429 batting average. He is 12-28 on the year with four RBI, three doubles, and four runs scored.
• Othon Delacruz is the second leading hitter at .333. He has scored three runs and is tied for the team lead in RBI with four.
• Gabe Valdez is third in hitting with a .308 batting average. He has the team's only triple along with a run scored and three RBI.
• Kevin Whitaker leads the pitching unit for the Mustangs with a 1.54 ERA in two games started. He has pitched 11.2 innings and leads the team in strikeouts with 17.
• JJ Kruzel has the second best ERA as a starter with a 2.08 ERA. He is also second on the team in the strikeouts with 16. He has the most innings pitched with 13.

Up Next
• The Grizzlies will head back to Texas next weekend to take on another Lone Star Conference. They will head to Odessa for a three-game series at UT Permian Basin.
• The first two games of the series will be a doubleheader on Saturday, Feb. 23 at 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. The finale will be Sunday, Feb. 24 at 11 a.m.
