Grizzlie Head North to Golden to Battle Orediggers

ALAMOSA, Colo. – Adams State Baseball will be back on the road as they head up to take on the Colorado School of Mines in a four game RMAC series.
 
OPPONENT: Colorado School of Mines Orediggers (15-8, 6-6 RMAC)
 
WHEN: Friday, March 29 – 3 p.m.
              Saturday, March 30 (DH) – 12 & 3 p.m.
              Sunday, March 31 – 12 p.m.

First Pitch
• The Grizzlies are heading into this road series after being swept by MSU Denver last weekend
• Adams State will look to get back on track against the Orediggers who split a four game series against Regis University last weekend
• This road trip will be quick as Adams State will be back home next weekend to take on University of Colorado at Colorado Springs

Adams State Baseball History
• Grizzlies Baseball begins its seventh season as an NCAA sport. The program was re-instituted prior to the 2013 season after a 35 year hiatus.
• Prior to the 2013, Adams State last sponsored baseball in 1976 season when the program was still a member of the NAIA.
• Adams State enjoyed quite a bit of success winning back-to-back RMAC championships in 1973 and 1974.
• The Grizzlies posted the best overall record in the conference in each of the last four years (1973-76) while sponsoring the sport before it was discontinued.
 
The Capra File
• Head Coach James Capra has led the Grizzlies Baseball in each of the last six seasons. Coach Capra is a graduate of Adams State (Class of 1980).
• Coach Capra was a member of the 1976 team before it was cut. He also played football for three seasons at Adams State and was a three-year starter at wide receiver.
 
Last Time Out
• The Grizzlies were swept by MSU Denver in a four game series.
• Game one and game two were played in tight fashion as the Grizzlies lost game one 6-4 and game two 9-5.
• The third and fourth games were all MSU Denver as they won game three 13-3 and game four 15-5.  
Batter Up!
• The Grizzlies have slowly been improving the offense over the past few weekends as five batters are hitting over .300 entering the weekend.
Jared Gay now owns the top spot on offense with a .395 batting average. He is 32-81 with a team-high 25 RBI and five home runs. He has scored 19 runs as well and is slugging .667.
Nico Nintze is second with a.341 batting average. He is 29-85 with a to go along with two homers and 15 RBI.
• Adding to the offense as well are Logan Bistrup and Dakota Solis who are batting .318 and .310, respectively. The duo have scored a combined 31 runs and tallied 22 RBI.
• Bistrup has 14 of the 25 RBI between the pair, and has scored 19 runs. He also has two home runs on the season and has four triples to lead the Grizzlies.
After a solid weekend of work Solis is now leading the Grizzlies in doubles with seven and he also has seven walks on the year as well.  

Doing Work on the Hill
• Despite the slow start on the mound on the Grizzlies, their pitching unit has allowed no more than seven runs in their two series wins this year.
Trent Hughes has the team's top ERA, a 6.48 mark on the year he also has 11 strikeouts in only 8.1 innings pitched
 • Troy Gutbub has thrown 37.0 innings this season for Adams State, which has resulted in 38 strikeouts, both numbers being best on the team
David Maldonado has the second most innings of work for Adams State at 30.2. He has a 9.39 ERA and is 2-4 on the season. He and Gutbub have the most wins on the year for Adams State

Road Warriors
• The Grizzlies were one the road for their first 14 games on the road before playing a single game on their home turf.
• Adams State will play a total of 26 games on the road this season and 24 games at home after the series shift with Colorado Christian.

Scouting Colorado School of Mines
• The Orediggers are 15-8 overall and 6-6 in RMAC competition. They went 2-2 last weekend against Regis University, winning the first two games and dropping the second two games in the series.
• Jace Selsor and Derek Daly are the two top hitters for Colorado School of Mines. Both are hitting .345 on the year. Daly has been the better power hitter with 11 homeruns, 33 RBI and a .798 slugging percentage. Both hitters have scored 21 runs on the year
• Trevor Kehe is also hitting .333 on the year with 30 runs scored and 12 stolen bases, he is leading the team in runs scored and stolen bases.
• Two other players are hitting over .300 for the Orediggers with Phil VanZale hitting .341 and Joe Popp hitting .318
• On the mound for Colorado School of Mines, they have a 6.64 team ERA and have 179 strikeouts on the season.
• Walter Pennington has been the top starter with a 3.35 ERA in 37.2 innings pitched with 35 strikeouts.
• Tyler Bloomster also has a 5.02 ERA and a 4-2 record in 37.2 innings pitched with 47 strikeouts with is the most on the team.
• Ian Durgin has been one of the best relievers with a 3.86 ERA in 10 appearances with nine strikeouts. 
• Defensively, the Orediggers have a team fielding percentage of .965. They have forced 28 double plays and committed just 27 errors this season.

Up Next
• Adams State is back on home soil next weekend as they will host University of Colorado at Colorado Springs.
• The four game series will begin Friday, April 5, with first pitch between the Grizzlies and Cougars at 3 p.m.
