Box Score 2 PLAINVIEW, Texas – Adams State Baseball falls in their first doubleheader on the road to Wayland Baptist University. The Pioneers took game one 8-1, and game two 5-3, setting the Grizzlies to an 0-2 start.
Game One
It was a quick start to the game for both the Grizzlies and the Pioneers, with only one run scored between the teams through three innings. The Grizzlies had a quick top of the first, going three up, three down.
Alfredo Villa made his first appearance for the Grizzlies on the mound, getting his first out from a line drive to centerfield. After giving up a single down the right side,
Cedrick Reynaud caught the runner stealing. The Grizzlies got their third out of the inning by Villa claiming his first strikeout.
Reynaud started off a promising second inning with a leadoff double. The Grizzlies added their second baserunner after
Kolton Bleggi was hit by a pitch.
Noah Befus advanced the runners with a flyout to left field, but the Grizzlies couldn't bring them home. Villa came out in the second getting a quick flyout to center field, then gave up a solo homerun to center field. The Pioneers ended the inning leading the Grizzlies 1-0.
It was a quick and quiet third inning with Jake Angeloplous as the only baserunner for Adams State off a single to first base. The Grizzlies played a quick bottom of the third, only allowing one baserunner as well, and completing a double play.
Jumping to the bottom of the fourth, the Pioneers added their second run to the board, from a solo homerun to centerfield. Villa bounced back getting two strikeouts and a line out to
Will Morley at short. The Pioneers opened the bottom of the fifth with similar fashion, a lead off homerun to left field. The Pioneers singled to third to get a runner abord with no outs. Wayland Baptist hit their fourth homerun of the game to give them the 5-0 lead.
The Grizzlies earned their first tally on the board at the top of the sixth.
Gavin Bell opened the sixth with a leadoff walk. Bell advanced to second on a wild pitch. With two out,
Matt Bathauer singled to right to field to score Bell. Bleggi doubled to left to keep the two-out rally going, advancing Bathauer to third. The Grizzlies ended the inning trailing 5-1.
Dominic Lomeli came into relieve Villa in the bottom of the sixth. The Grizzlies got the leadoff to flyout to left to get their first out. The Pioneers followed the out with a triple to right center and a double to bring in their sixth run. Wayland Baptist added another triple, followed by a single to score two more runs in the bottom of the sixth. The Pioneers finished the first game of the doubleheader, winning 8-1.
The Grizzlies were led by freshmen,
Matt Bathauer who went 2-3 with one 1 RBI. Villa led the Grizzlies from the bump making through five innings with 7 strikeouts, 4 force outs and 2 groundouts.
Game Two
Adams State opened their second game with high hopes with a scoreless top and bottom of the first inning. At the top of the Grizzlies second inning,
Mike Bathauer led off with a single up the middle.
Chase Dixon doubled to left center, advancing Bathauer to third. Morley hit a sac fly to centerfield to score Bathauer. The Grizzlies ended the second leading 1-0.
Dalton Carleo led the Grizzlies on the bump, forcing three groundouts in the first. After an error in the field, the Pioneers had one out with a man on second. Wayland Baptist doubled down the line to tie the game at one. The Pioneers added one more run in the bottom of the third, to lead Adams State 2-1.
After a one, two, three top and bottom of the fourth, the Grizzlies added two more baserunners in the top of the fifth. Morley singled up the middle and advanced to second after Angeloplous was walked. Wayland Baptist led the bottom of the fifth off with a double down the right field line that was followed by a homerun to left center, extending their lead by two. With three men abord, the Pioneers hit a sac fly to score their fifth run.
The Grizzlies scored their second run in the top of the sixth. With two men on and two outs, Dixon singled through the left side, scoring
Brody Bettis. Entering the bottom of six,
Chance Strand entered to game to relieve Carleo. Strand had a quick one, two, three bottoms of six and seventh innings.
Adams State opened the eighth with Reynaud reaching on an error. After Bettis entered to pinch run,
Matt Bathauer singled through the right side to advance Bettis to second.
Mike Bathauer then reached on a fielders choice, to score Bettis after a throwing error. The Grizzlies got out of the eighth and left two men on in the top of the ninth. Adams State finished the second game falling 5-3.
The Grizzlies were led by Morley going 3-3 in the second game with one RBI. Bleggi, Dixon, and
Matt Bathauer went 2-4 in game two to assist in the Grizzlies runs. Carleo finished the day completing five innings with four strikeouts. Strand completed three innings with six strikeouts and zero earned runs.
The Grizzlies will be back out on the field tomorrow to challenge Wayland Baptist in another double header at 12 p.m. and 3 p.m.
