Adams State Wins Home Opening Series

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 ALAMOSA, Colo. – Adams State Baseball closed their home opening series with two big wins in their doubleheader February 15 against University of the Southwest. The Grizzlies dominated the Mustangs 12-9 in game one and 9-5 in game two. Adams State won three of four in their two-day doubleheader with University of the Southwest.
 
Game One
The Mustangs opened the first inning finding a way to mark a tally on the board. With a one out single, the runner advanced to second on a passed ball to get into scoring position. Hitting a single to right center, the Mustangs brought in their first run. The Grizzlies opened the bottom of the first with baserunners in attempt to respond. Jace Wytulka reached on a one out single to center field. Cedrick Reynaud and Nico Nintze joined Wytulka on board after getting hit by a pitch, then walked. The Mustangs defense ended the inning with Adams State trailing 0-1.
 
After a quick second inning, both the Mustangs and Grizzlies had big third innings. University of the Southwest scored four runs on four hits. The Mustangs got the inning started with back to back singles followed by a walk to load the bases. University of the Southwest then doubled to deep right to bring in three runs. The Mustangs tacked on one more with a single to left, ending the top of the third leading 0-5.
 
The Grizzlies responded in the second half of the inning scoring four runs on five hits. Chase Dixon lead the inning off with a single to center. After advancing on a balk and a passed ball, Reynaud was walked. Nintze brought the Grizzlies back into the game with a three-run homer to right field. Kolton Bleggi joined in on the fun and followed with a homer to left. The Grizzlies ended the third inning trailing 4-5.
 
Adams State faced a three up, three down top of the fourth and continued heating up their bats in the bottom half of the inning. Making it back around to the top of their lineup, Dixon hit a lead-off single through the left side, followed by Wytulka's double to left field. Dixon scored the Grizzly's tying run after a wild pitch, advancing Wytulka to third. Reynaud was hit by a pitch for the second time of the game, giving Adams State runners on the corners. Nintze singled to right, scoring Wytulka and advanced Reynaud to third. Zach Thomas loaded the bases from a walk, and advanced to third on an error by the Mustang infield to score both Reynaud and Nintze. The Grizzlies ended the inning leading the Mustangs 9-5.
 
The scoring did not stop there, with each team added two more runs in the fifth. At the top of the fifth, the Mustangs loaded the bases, bring in one from an RBI 6-3 and a single through the left side. The Grizzlies responded with a lead-off walk to Dixon and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Wytulka reached on an error in the outfield and moved Dixon to third. Reynaud followed up reached on an error at third, scoring Dixon. With the bases loaded, Bleggi hit into an RBI double play, scoring Wytulka to put the Grizzlies up 11-7.
 
The reliever, Orlando Romero gave the Grizzlies a three-strikeout inning to close the top of the sixth. The Grizzlies led off the bottom of the sixths with back-to-back walks from Mike Bathauer and Jake Angelopulous. Brody Bettis hit a SAC grounder to the pitcher to score the Grizzy's 12 run.
 
The Mustangs battled back in the top of the seventh, leading off with two walks. After advances on a wild pitch, the Mustangs singed to left center scoring one. University of the Southwest hit a SAC fly to give the Mustangs their final run of the game.
 
Adams State took down the Mustangs 12-9 in game one. The Grizzlies were led by Dixon and Ninzte each going 2-3. Nintze ended the game with 4 RBIs followed by Bleggi and Mi. Bathauer each adding 2 RBIs. Cutter Smith got the win for the Grizzlies on the mound, making it through 4 innings with 3 strikeouts. Romero led the Grizzlies on the hill with 5 strikeouts and completing 2 innings. Chance Strand closed the game for the Grizzlies, facing 4 batters, with one strikeout and only giving up 1 hit.
 
Game Two
The Grizzlies opened game two with three scoreless innings. Adams State opened the game defensively with a three up, three down top of the first. Dixon got the Grizzlies started with a lead-off double to right field. Nintze singled to right, scoring Dixon to earn the first run of the game.
 
The Grizzlies tacked on three more runs in the bottom of the second. With two outs and the bases loaded, Wytulka singled to center field to score Thomas and Bettis. Reynaud followed up with a single to left to score Dixion. Adams State ended the inning leading the Mustangs 4-0.
 
After a one, two three, top and bottom of the third, The Mustang bats woke up in the top of the fourth. University of the Southwest hit a lead-off single to center, followed by a double to right. The Mustangs concluded the inning with two RBI groundouts, getting on the board trailing 4-2.
 
Adams State responded in the bottom of the fourth with three runs. Mi. Bathauer led the inning off with a single to center field. Dixon and Wytulka joined Bathauer on the bags from two walks. Reynaud hit a single to center field to score two runs. The Grizzlies added their third run of the inning from a single by Bleggi to score Wytulka.
 
The Grizzlies put up one more in the bottom of the fifth, extending their lead 8-2. Paul Giglio reached on an error at first and worked his way around the diamond from walk to Mi. Bathauer and a wild pitch. Giglio scored on a fielder's choice to put the Grizzlies up by 6 runs.
 
The Mustangs battled back in the sixth hitting a two-run jack to right center. Nico Nintze responded hitting a lead-off homer in the bottom of six, maintaining a 9-4 lead. University of the Southwest continued to fight in the top of the seventh, scoring one run on one hit.
 
The Grizzlies took down the Mustangs 9-5 in game two of the double header. Reynaud led the Grizzlies in game two, going 2-3 with 3 RBIs. Wytulka also completed the second game with 3 RBIs, going 1-3. Nintze was also a big contributor going 2-4 with 2 RBIS. Troy Gutbub led the Grizzlies on the hill, completing 6 innings, facing 23 batters. Jamison Fuentes closed the game for Adams State facing four batters with 3 strikeouts.
 
The Grizzlies will hit the road next weekend to take on CSU-Pueblo Saturday, Feb. 29 and Sunday, March 1.
