ALAMOSA, Colo. – Adams State University announced earlier this summer that
Katelyn Smith and
Justin Boyd, two veteran members of the Grizzly Athletic Department, will serve as Co-Athletic Directors, following the recent retirement of longtime AD Larry Mortensen.
Boyd was promoted to the role after being hired by Adams State in July of 2019 as the Senior Associate Athletic Director of Compliance and Internal Affairs. Boyd a Snyder, Texas native, comes with experience as a former NCAA student-athlete himself, competing in track & field for Division II Angelo State, and Division I Baylor University. At Angelo State, Boyd was a three-time Division II All-American in the 400-meter hurdles and 4x400 meter relay. Upon transferring to Baylor, he was part of two NCAA Division I National Championship 4x400 meter relay teams in 2008.
Before Adams State, Boyd served in Athletic Compliance Office for the Cougars at Washington State University. Prior to his stint at Washington State University, Boyd served as Assistant Athletic Director for Compliance at Tarleton State University.
"Following Larry Mortensen in this role and the legacy he left is an honor that I do not take lightly," said Boyd. "Adams State is a tradition rich athletic department in which we expect to add value and continued success for our programs."
Boyd graduated from Baylor University with a Bachelor of Science degree with an emphasis in HHPR. He went on to earn his Masters of Science degree in Athletic Administration from Tarleton State University in 2013.
Smith enters her sixth year in the Grizzly Athletic Department where served as an assistant women's basketball coach for three seasons and jumped to a new role as the Business Manager for the Athletic Department in 2017. Smith served as an Associate AD and the Senior Women's Administrator since the fall of 2019. She will still serve as the SWA.
"I am so excited for this new chapter at Adams State," said Smith. "I am eager to continue to build off of Larry Mortensen's successes with Adams State Athletics and continue to lead a department of hard-working staff and student-athletes."
Smith graduated from Pacific Lutheran University with a Bachelor of Science degree in Kinesiology and was a four-year letter winner in basketball for the Lutes. She went on to earn her mas Master of Science degree in Exercise Science from Adams State University in 2016.
