ALAMOSA, Colo.—The Adams State University women's basketball team held the visiting MSU Denver Roadrunners scoreless for more than seven and a half minutes in the third quarter but a late momentum shift and missed call doomed the Grizzlies as MSU Denver escaped Plachy Hall with a 64-58 win on Wednesday evening.
The first quarter saw both teams feeling each other out as the score was tied at nine early. As the quarter progressed, the Roadrunners were able to jump out to a five-point lead, 19-14.
The second quarter saw the same effect as the Roadrunners outscored the Grizzlies by five, 14-9 despite three straight buckets by
Angelline Nageak. One of the deciding factors was a 7-of-7 showing from the free throw line by MSU Denvers while Adams State failed to even reach the charity stripe. The score at the break was 33-23.
The Grizzlies exploded in the third quarter as they outscored the Roadrunners 22-15 including a stifling defense that held them scoreless for more than seven and a half minutes. The Grizzlies went on an 11-0 run to take a lead late in the third, before a momentum shift helped MSU Denver take a 43-42 lead into the fourth quarter.
A back-and-forth affair in the fourth quarter saw the Grizzly defense continue it's pressure, however, a missed ten-second backcourt call on the Roadrunners squelched any momentum the Grizzlies had as they finished the game by outscoring ASU 22-15.
Adams State shot 36.9 percent (24-of-65) percent from the field as
Elaina Watson was the leading scorer with 14 points and
Angelline Nageak scored 13 points.
The Grizzlies will have a day off before they hit the road to take on Western Colorado on Friday at 5:30 p.m. inside Paul Wright Gymnasium.
