GUNNISON, Colo.—The Adams State University Women's Basketball team was able to snap a 9-game losing streak to the Western Colorado University Mountaineers on Friday night inside Paul Wright Gymnasium. The Grizzlies won 64-47.
Adams State used the shock and awe formula to start the game as they forced the Mountaineers into four turnovers and scored ten points in the first 2 minutes and 20 seconds. The Grizzly defense held the Mountaineers scoreless until the 6:17 mark of the quarter when they hit two free throws.
The Mountaineers then rallied and went on a 16-2 run eventually taking their first lead of the game at 13-12 with 2:12 left in the quarter. They finished off the period with couple of treys and led 19-14.
The second quarter of the game was just as close with the Grizzlies matching their first quarter production as they outscored Western 14-11 to cut the lead to just two, 30-28.
The thiurd quarter started off rough for the Grizzlies as they started by going 0-of-6 from the free throw line and could not buy a bucket. But as the quarter progressed they were able to outscore the Mountaineers 18-9 including a 10-0 run to take a 46-39 lead.
Adams State then scored another 18 points in the final quarter while their defense held the Mountaineers to just eight points.
The Grizzlies now 7-9 on the season and 5-6 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference, were led by
Angelline Nageak, who scored 14 points while both
Kayla Harris and Kaitlin Bell scored in double figures with 12 and 10 points, respectively. In the game the Grizzlies forced the Mountaineers into 29 turnovers where they scored 25 points of those. Adams State did stellar on the defensive boards as they held the Mountaineers to just four offensive rebounds incluidng three team rebounds.
The Grizzlies will return to action on Saturday at 5:00 p.m. when they travel to Whalen Gymnasium in Durango, Colo. to take on Fort Lewis College.
