DURANGO, Colo.—A last second driving layup and a defensive rebound by
Kayla Harris sealed the first weekend sweep of Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (RMAC) opponents in the same weekend for the first time since Dec. 30-31, 2011. The Grizzlies won the game 64-62.
Adams State opened the game with an 11-1 run for their biggest lead but the Skyhawks were able to overcome that and pull back into the game and the game was tied at 16-16.
The Skyhawks pulled within six points to end the first half 35-29 but a 19-4 run by Fort Lewis made the score 43-38 with 3:45 left tin the third. Fort Lewis outscored Adams State by ten, 21-11 to take a 50-46 lead into the fourth.
The Skyhawks got their biggest lead of six as they led 52-46 before the Grizzlies rallied for a 8-0 run to take a 54-52 lead but a
Laura Gutierrez trey was matched by the Skyhawks with 6:44 left in the fourth.
Things then got interesting as the Grizzlies saw the game tied 60 with 2:20 showing. The two teams then battled and had several miscues but with 14.7 seconds left the Grizzlies had the opportunity to get the final shot. Although the play wasn't played the way it was drawn up the Grizzlies were able to get the bucket. A questionable foul on the inbound hurt the Grizzlies but the free throws were unable to fall and the Grizzlies hung on to win.
Harris was the leading scorer for the Grizzlies with 16 points as she was 5-of-10 from the field including 2-of-4 from beyond the arch.
Kaitlyn Bell scored 13 points while
Elaina Watson scored 11 points.
The Grizzlies will return home on Friday Jan. 28 and Saturday, Jan. 29th when they host Regis and Colorado School of Mines. Tip-off for both games are scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
