WBB | Grizzlies overcome 14-point hole for third straight win

ALAMOSA, Colo.—The Adams State University Women's basketball team overcame a 14-point second-half deficient to down the Regis Rangers 68-62 on Friday night inside Plachy Hall. The win was the Grizzlies third straight win as they improved to 9-9 overall and 7-6 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference.
 
The Grizzlies have won three straight for the first time since the 2013-14 season, ironically, the last time the Grizzlies won nine games was back in 2013-14. The Grizzlies also had stellar defense as they forced 25 turnovers in the game.
 
Demi Black led the Grizzly scorers with 13 points while Kayla Harris scored 12 points in 19 minutes of action.
 
With the Grizzlies trailing 53-41 entering the final quarter, the Grizzlies came alive as they outscored the Rangers 27-9. The Grizzlies went 11-of-18 from the field.
 
The game looked like the Rangers were going to pull away early because personal fouls allowed the Rangers to take eight free throws. The Grizzly defense did all they could as they kept the lead within two possessions and only trailed 16-12 after one.
 
The second quarter saw Adams State battled back and thanks in part to a 11-0 run over 2:32 that included three pointers from the Grizzly snipers, Laura Gutierrez and Stephanie Ruiz. The Grizzlies led by as many as five points, 23-18, before the Rangers came back and took a 32-31 lead at the half.
 
Regis jumped out to a 11-point lead, 37-46 as the Grizzlies were called for four personal fouls. In the first seven minutes of the quarter. The Grizzlies trailed by as many as 14-points byt closed the gap to 53-41 at the end of the third.
 
The Grizzlies went on a 7-0 run and closed the gap to 57-54 with 4:39 remaining. Over the next minute and a half the Grizzlies came back and took a 60-59 lead thanks to smothering defense.
 
Adams State returns to action on Saturday when they take on No. 5 Colorado School of Mines at 5:30 p.m.
