ALAMOSA/GUNNISON, Colo. — Adams State started their regular season this weekend both at home, and in Gunnison, Colo. for the 2023 Dan France Continental Divide Cup. The Grizzlies hosted the Mountaineers Saturday and then went to Gunnison for Sunday's competition.
Men's Swimming
The Grizzlies competed in 11 events each day. On Saturday the men started off the day competing in the 200 Yard Medley Relay. Adams State swam two teams in this race and the winning quartet consisted of Cody Natali, Sebastian Blevins, Kaden Scott, & Brayden Stalcup and they swam a time of 1:42.60. Brayden Stalcup also shattered his seed times in the 50 yard freestyle and the 100 yard freestyle. He came in with a 23.78 in the 50 yard and 51.94 in the 100 yard and swam a 22.60 and 50.39 respectively . Ricky Santiago also bettered his seed time from a 24.29 to swimming a 23.51 Saturday. In the 200 yard IM Matt Tidwell also raced very well, coming in with a 2:10.09 and leaving with a new personal record of 2:03.76. Another impressive race came from Payton Bowman, winning the 100 yard Butterfly with a time of 57.26. To wrap up the meet on Saturday the Grizzlies raced another relay, but this time it was the 400 yard freestyle relay. The winning squad consisted of George Lutkenhaus, Payton Bowman, Bryce Scott, & Brayden Stalcup and they swam a time of 3:26.40.
On Sunday the Grizzlies opened their competition with the 400 yard medley relay with a time of 3:49.42. The relay consisted of Cody Natali, Chayton Budzik, Matt Tidwell, and Payton Bowman. There was then a very close race between teammates Brayden Stalcup and Derek Cooley in the 100 yard IM with the slight edge going to Stalcup with a time 1:00.29, Cooley finished just behind him with a time of 1:00.87. The men wrapped up the weekend with the 200 yard freestyle relay. The quartet of George Lutkenhaus, Connor Matthews, Brayden Stalcup, & Ricky Santiago swam a time of 1:33.59.
Women's Swimming
Unlike the men, the women competed in only 19 events throughout the weekend. The Grizzlies did not have a representative in the 400 yard IM, 50 yard breaststroke, or the 200 yard butterfly, all of which were on Sunday. On Saturday the women opened up competition with the 200 yard medley relay. In a close race the Grizzlies placed 2nd to the Mountaineers. The Grizzlies swam a time of 1:54.84, just 2 seconds behind Western's team. Jocelyn Jones and Lena Brown placed 2nd and 3rd in the 50 yard freestyle with times of 25.49 and 26.89. Anjali Friedman placed 3rd in the 200 yard IM with a time of 2:20.87. Payton Schwartz placed 2nd in the 100 yard backstroke with a time of 1:03.22. Saturday's competition came to an end for the Grizzlies with the 400 yard freestyle relay.
On Sunday, the women started with the 400 yard medley relay, but were unfortunately disqualified from that race. Later in the day Hannah Zimmer set a personal record in the 100 yard IM with a time of 1:10.97, placing her third. In the 200 yard breaststroke Anjali Friedman placed second with a time of 2:35.91, just one second away from 1st. Jocelyn Jones also set a lifetime best in the 50 yard butterfly with a time of 28.13, placing her second. To wrap up the weekend the women raced in the 200 yard freestyle relay with a time of 1:53.65. The squad consisted of Lena Brown, Samanatha Buttermore, Hannah Zimmer, and Jocelyn Jones.
