RAPID CITY, S.D.— Even though South Dakota Mines didn't get their biggest lead of three until the overtime period, the Hardrockers gave the Adams State University women's basketball team a scare on Friday night inside Goddell Gymnasium on Friday night. The Grizzlies came back and narrowly won the game 74-72.
With the win the Grizzlies improve to 18-7 overall while the Hardrockers, who have fallen to the Grizzlies in the last three straight, fall to 3-22 on the season.
The Hardrockers didn't score for the first four minutes of the game, however, they did roar back and tie the game at 16 after the first quarter. The Grizzlies took a three-point advantage into the halftime break before the Hardrockers outscored the Grizzlies 19-18 in the third quarter before tying the game up in the final quarter.
The Grizzlies than found themselves in a hole early in the overtime period, however, the pressure became too much as the Grizzly defense stumped the Hardrockers in the final 1:51 of the game and nailed free throws to close out with a win.
The Grizzlies were led by
Elaina Watson, who set a new career-high, with 24 points.
Kiiyani Anitielu had 16 points while Rhianna Davis tacked in 14 and
Harmanie Dominguez scored 12.
As a team the Grizzlies shot 38 (21-of-71) from the field with just three deep shots.
The Grizzlies return to action on Saturday when they play at Black Hills State starting at 5:00 p.m.
The Grizzlies will return home next Friday and Saturday to close out the regular season.
