Grizzlies Set Program Record, Battle Through First Two Days of RMAC Championships

Grand Junction, Colo. – The Adams State Grizzlies powered through the first two days of the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Swimming and Diving Championships, hosted by Colorado Mesa. After six sessions, both the men's and women's teams have 54 points, with the men in sixth place and the women in ninth.

The competition began Tuesday night with the 800-yard freestyle relay. The women's team—featuring Emily Markle, Jenna Lang, Kennedy Larson and Jocelyn Jones—finished ninth with a time of 8 minutes, 26.01 seconds. Meanwhile, the men's squad set a new program record of 7:11.20. Dillon Brown, Devin Walters, George Lutkenhaus and Brayden Stalcup shaved a second off their previous best from earlier this season.

The momentum continued Wednesday morning with the 200-yard individual medley preliminaries, where Anjali Friedman (2:18.45) and Brianna Uhrig (2:28.85) competed for the women, while Connor Matthews finished in 2:13.28 for the men.

In the 50-yard freestyle, Jones led the Grizzly women, placing 26th in 25.30 seconds. Ryley Martinez followed in 28th (25.32), with Danielle Aquino (27.22), Brenna Otteman (27.28) and Saige Toth-Norkett (28.13) rounding out the event. On the men's side, Mohamed Abujiba led the way in 29th with a time of 22.00 seconds. Lutkenhaus (22.70), Matthews (24.35) and Devin Cumby (24.43) also competed for Adams State.

The final event of the morning session was the 1,000-yard freestyle, with Larson leading the Grizzlies in 33rd place at 11:57.08. Lang (12:31.44) and Sammi Buttermore (13:14.78) also contributed solid performances.

Wednesday night featured just one event—the 200-yard medley relay. The women's A-team of Martinez, Uhrig, Jones and Otteman secured eighth place in 1:53.22, while the B-team of Aquino, Buttermore, Friedman and Larson clocked in at 2:08.49. The men's squad of Matthews, Abujiba, Walters and Ricky Santiago placed fifth in 1:39.95.

The Grizzlies return to the pool Thursday at 10 a.m. as the championships continue through Saturday.
