ALAMOSA, Colo. (November 12, 2014) – Saturday marks the season finale for the Adams State University football team as they travel to face the No. 19 Colorado School of Mines Orediggers. The game is slated for an 11:00 a.m. start at the North Area Athletic Complex in Arvada. The game will not take place on the campus of CSM due to football stadium construction.
ASU is set to go up against the Orediggers who carry a 9-1 overall record and 7-1 mark in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (RMAC) play. The lone loss for Mines came in the form of a 20-12 defeat against Colorado State University-Pueblo on Oct. 25. Since that defeat the Orediggers have rattled off wins against Colorado Mesa University and Western State Colorado University.
Adams State will line up against quarterback Justin Dvorak and a Mines offense that ranks first in the conference with 39.6 ppg. Dvorak, a sophomore from Tomball, Texas, ranks second amongst all NCAA Division II athletes in passing yards per game (354.1), total passing yards (3,541), and total offense yards per game (382.1). Nationally, Dvorak trails only Lance Orender of New Mexico Highlands University in those statistical categories. Dvorak has registered 400+ passing yards in four games and threw for a season-high 500 yards on Sept. 27 in a win over Black Hills State University.
The Grizzlies look to spoil postseason plans for the Orediggers after wrapping up the home portion of their schedule on Nov. 8 against Fort Lewis College. A big second half was needed by ASU in the 34-30 win after trailing 23-7 in the closing minutes before halftime. One of several players to engineer the comeback was sophomore quarterback
Auston Hillman who threw for 168 yards on a 13-of-18 performance. He totaled four touchdowns on the day and also rushed for 81 yards on eight carries. Adding to his impressive outing, Hillman went 7-of-8 in the fourth quarter.
On Saturday the Grizzlies look to avenge last season's 45-10 home loss to CSM. In 2012, Adams State scored 26 unanswered points en route to a 36-25 victory in Golden. In that game,
Justin Kauffman tallied 102 yards rushing on 18 carries and one touchdown.
The conference tilt with Mines serves as
Marty Heaton's final game as head coach and will also serve as the final collegiate game for 16 seniors.
