OGDEN, Utah (November 6, 2014) —The Adams State University Grizzlies women's basketball team lost this evening in their first game, an exhibition contest, against the NCAA Division I Weber State University Wildcats. Weber State finished on top with an 84-68 victory over the visiting Grizzlies.
Adams State jumped to an early lead after the tip-off, securing a seven point advantage in the opening three minutes to lead the Wildcats 14-7. Weber State responded to ASU early success with a 31-8 run in the next ten minutes of the game. Finally, a three-point shot from sophomore
Emilie Klint with five minutes remaining in the first half proved to stop the bleeding temporarily. In response to Klint's shot, the Grizzlies had an offensive run, scoring the next nine points to pull with striking distance of the home team.
Klint scored five of the nine points with the three-point shot and a pair of free throws to pull the Grizzlies within seven points. The earlier barrage of points scored by the Wildcats, helped Weber State easily cruise into half time with a 45-31 lead.
In the first half, Weber State dominated in the paint- outscoring the Grizzlies by a 12-4 margin. Turnovers and the inability to rebound the ball seemed to hinder the ASU unit. WSU collected 15 points off turnovers while also scoring 13 points from second chance shots.
In the second half, it proved to be more of the same. WSU led by as much as 18 points mainly due to the performance of Kallie Quinn who scored 18 points for the Wildcats off 7-14 shooting.
Despite falling 84-68 the Grizzlies did close out the last seven minutes of the game with 19 points.
Klint and guard
Desiree Anderson both led the Grizzlies offensively, scoring 19 points apiece.
Lena Jaycox had a successful evening for the Black and Green with 10 points, two assists, and added one steal in 29 minutes of play.
Adams State now prepares for the Midwestern State Classic in Wichita Falls, Texas. Their first game will be against Midwestern State University at 7 p.m. on November 14
