Box Score 2 PORTALES, N.M. (February 7, 2015) – Adams State University continued the early portion of their season on the road with a three game weekend series against Eastern New Mexico University. After Saturday's results, Adams State is still searching for their first win of the season after falling 17-5 in game one and 8-3 in game two.
Game 1The Greyhounds tacked on four runs in the first, fourth, and fifth innings and later posted a five-run seventh en route to a 17-5 win over Adams State in the series opener. The Grizzly bats continued to struggle and were left off the scoreboard until the fourth when a
Jaron Dorchinez single to centerfield brought
Dillon Granzella in from third.
ASU followed with a run in the fifth thanks in part to a pair of ENMU errors. The run was scored by
Chris Morley who led off with a double down the left field line and promptly advanced to third on a passed ball. He crossed home plate as a result of another passed ball with
Tyler Thurston at the dish.
Nico Porreco, Granzella, and
Drew Wells each picked up an RBI in the ninth but their efforts fell short of pushing ASU back into the game.
Starter
Andrew MacMahon battled through yet another tough outing and was pulled in the fourth inning for reliever
Ben Williams. MacMahon gave up nine hits, eight runs, and struck out four to move to 0-2 on the season.
Dorchinez was the lone Grizzly to pick up multiple hits and also added a RBI. In total, the Grizzlies stranded 11 batters on base.
Game 2A bases loaded walk in the second inning gave ASU an early 1-0 lead in the top of the second but the Greyhounds put up three runs in the bottom of the frame. Although an error aided in the scoring efforts, starter
J.D. Heredia struggled the following inning by giving up a leadoff home run in the bottom of the third. Later in the inning Chris Sanders collected a two RBI single that pushed ENMU ahead, 6-1.
Zach Moldenhauer helped the Grizzlies add two more runs later in the game in the fifth and seventh but it wasn't enough in the 8-3 defeat.
Heredia picked up the loss after 3.1 innings on the bump as relievers
Benjamin Nutsch and Josh Keaton finished off the game. Nutsch and Keaton combined for 2.2 innings on the mound and did not allow a hit.
Thurston finished 2-4 at the plate with two runs as Morley and Moldenhauer both added a RBI in defeat.
The Grizzlies and Greyhounds are slated to complete their weekend series on Sunday at 12:00 p.m.
