ALAMOSA, Colo. – As the Adams State Men's Soccer team prepares to hit the road for a weekend in Utah against conference foes Westminster and Dixie State, their goal remains the same as it has been all season, and that is to compete.
The 2018 campaign has been a tumultuous one for the young Grizzlies. After setting a single season record in wins in 2017, this year's team is winless in 14 contests, two of those being ties. The identity of this team is different. They play gritty defense and typically get solid play out of their goalies, and this has kept them in games this year.
Unfortunately, it hasn't been enough in those games, as each week the Grizzlies have struggled to generate a consistent offensive attack. They prepare to take on two opponents that they have not yet faced this season, Westminster and Dixie State, in what will be their longest road trip of the season to Utah.
Both team present different challenges, as Adams State will head out looking for their first conference win and overall win of the season. They take on Westminster at 4 P.M. in Salt Lake City on Friday, and Dixie State at 1 P.M. in St. George on Sunday.
Scouting the Griffins
Westminster has been one of the most consistently dominant teams in the RMAC week in and week out this season. They have a balanced attack, with Danny Darelli and Amit Hefer leading the offense that has scored 31 goals this season and averages 14 shots a game. Their two goalies, Will Desantis and Max Medley have split time this season as each have started seven games. Each are very capable and have come up big for the Griffins this season in defensive games.
Scouting the Trailblazers
Dixie State has struggled in RMAC play this year only having won two conference games, both of which have come against Fort Lewis. They have generally struggled on the offensive end and like Adams State, have come up short it numerous low-scoring contests. Moises Medina will be the offensive player to watch in the matchup, as he leads Dixie in all offensive categories. Zach Nielson has been solid in the goal for the Trailblazers, registering 48 saves on the year.
