Alamosa Colo. – The Adams State Men's soccer team looks to conclude the 2019 season this weekend, opening the final week of conference play at home for a Southern Colorado showdown against the CSU-Pueblo Thunderwolves on Friday, then visiting the Colorado Mesa Mavericks in Grand Junction on Sunday. Grizzlies clash with the Thunderwolves Friday at 3 p.m. on the ASU Soccer Field, then hit the road to face the Mavs for a Sunday matchup kicking off at 1:30 p.m.
Keeping Up With the Grizzlies
The Adams State Men's soccer team looks to end the 2019 season on a high note, entering Week 7 of conference play with an overall record of 1-12-1 including a 1-10-1 record within the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference. The opening home game will be in honor of the senior class as they conclude their days of playing on the ASU Soccer Field in Friday's match. Seniors will be honored with a pregame presentation before the pitch to kick off the final week in the 2019 season. In search for a last chance of glory, the Grizzlies have an opportunity to capitalize at home against the Thunderwolves to potentially snap a six-game losing streak.
Dylan Udero and
Abdoulie Danso see nothing but victory ahead as the two seniors who have led the team for the majority of the season look to end their collegiate careers with a bang. Behind the two seniors stands junior forward,
Benji Rogers who leads the Grizzlies in shot on goal percentage and overall shot percentage. At goalkeeper,
Jacob Faircloth has started in all 14 games this season and looks to end his collegiate career with two more. Faircloth has 89 saves on the season and stands at second in the RMAC for saves-per-game with just over a tenth of a percentage away in average saves per goal from securing the top spot in the conference.
Grizzlies look to bounce back after a falling to both Dixie State and Westminster at home last week, closing out game two of week six on a sixth shut-out loss on the season. Dixie State outshot the Grizzlies at home, but the matchup would be a nail-biter in the end. The Trailblazers would put up two points in the first half after facing a quiet Adams State offense and seeing little to no retaliation. The second half would prove to be the deciding point of the matchup as the Grizzlies would earn their way back into contention off a goal from
Benji Rogers in the 59
th minute. Rogers would attempt to strike again but was blocked from knotting the score between the RMAC foes. It would be DSU to penetrate Grizzly territory and capitalize on a corner kick to seal their first win on ASU turf.
After falling to one Utah foe, it was on to the other. The visiting Griffins would score early in the first minute, showing why they stood in the top 25 in Division II. The Grizzlies would put up nine shots to Westminster's six in the first half but stayed scoreless after 45. It would be the Griffins to switch gears in the second and put up another early goal in the 50
th minute in what would eventually be the final score of the bout. The Grizzlies, unable to score would fall at home for a second time in Week 6.
Scouting the Thunderwolves
The Thunderwolves travel further South to meet the Grizzlies at seventh place in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference. The Pack stands behind Dixie State as they look for a successful season closer to lock in a spot in the post-season RMAC tournament. CSU-Pueblo would pull off a major upset against No. 25 ranked Westminster, outlasting the Griffins 1-0 to open Week 6 of conference play. The Thunderwolves' glory would be limited however, falling to Dixie State in a close-call matchup at home 3-2. The Blazers would put up three consecutive points and wouldn't be answered until the 86
th.
CSU-Pueblo comes into the final week of the regular season lead by freshman mid-fielder, Vinzent Zingel. Zingel leads the pack in goals, points, shot percentage, shot-on-goal percentage, and stands at second in the RMAC for shots and shots on goal. Behind him are #18 Carlos Espinoza and #4. Michael Chism.
Last Meeting
The Grizzlies and Thunderwolves last met on Art & Lorraine Gonzales Stadium in Pueblo in a matchup that would end in overtime to kick off the first week of conference play in the 2019 season.
Abdoulie Danso would put the Grizzlies on the board first with an assisted goal from Greyson Gillman in the 50
th minute. Adams State would go on to be unanswered until the 85
th minute on a goal from Vinzent Zingel, taking the game into overtime. It would be the Thunderwolves to advance into Grizzly territory after the pitch and score in the 93
rd to put Adams State down 2-1 at home.
Scouting the Mavericks
The Mavericks await the Grizzlies at home to play on Walker Field in a Sunday afternoon bout to close the 2019 regular season. Colorado Mesa stands in fourth in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference with an overall record of 9-4-2 including a conference record of 7-3-2. Led by senior forward, Lawan Abary, Alec Fronapfel, and Ramses Atahuapa, the Mavericks look to celebrate their seniors this weekend and close out the regular season with a spot clinched in the RMAC tournament.
Colorado Mesa opened Week 6 of conference play at home against South Dakota Mines in what would become a 4-0 shut-out loss for the visiting Hardrockers. The Mavericks opened with a single goal in the first half and would continue to put up three more in the second. Lawan Abary would score his fifth on the season in the 62
nd on a penalty kick. The visiting Hardrockers would be outshot 11-3 and have 17 fouls on Mesa's 15.
Colorado Mines would be next to face the Mavs in Grand Junction, but the high-flying CMU offense would be shut-out by the Orediggers after 90. The only goal of the matchup would come about in the 67
th from Colo. School of Mines' Jason Zobott. The Mavericks would only have eight shots to CSM's 18.
Last Meeting
The Grizzlies and Mavericks last met on the ASU Soccer Field in a late October matchup that would end in a shut-out loss for the Grizzlies. Lawan Abary found his way passed Grizzly defenders in the first minute to score and put Mesa on the board first. The first half would stay tight as the Grizzlies would fight back and have six first half shot attempts on the Mavericks' seven. The second half would see three more goals from the high-powered CMU offense to shut out the Grizzlies at home 4-0. The Grizzlies have yet to outlast the Mavericks in team history with a total of twelve matches since 2011, with the closest to coming to a victory being a tie early in the 2011 season.
