GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. — Adams State women's wrestling opened its season Saturday at the Maverick Open, hosted by Colorado Mesa University. The Grizzlies had one first-place finisher, with three others placing in the top six.

Corrie Williams wrestled her way to victory in her first tournament as an Adams State Grizzly. Williams, a transfer from Snow College, was the 2024 NJCAA national champion at 136 pounds. Wrestling at 138 pounds, Williams defeated Nichole Moore of Fort Hays State by decision, 9-7.

Taking third for the Grizzlies was Angella Van Valkenberg, another Snow College transfer, wrestling at 145 pounds. Van Valkenberg won by technical fall over Celina Cooke of Colorado Mesa, 10-0. After losing her opening match by fall to unattached athlete Mollie Dare, Van Valkenberg did not lose again on her way to a third-place finish.

Katelyn Faczak, a true freshman wrestling at 110 pounds, took fourth place for the Grizzlies. After falling to Rachel Jones of Snow College in the third round, Faczak wrestled back to the third-place match before falling to Sophia Shultz of Fort Hays State in 1:38.

Scoring the last points for the Grizzlies was Abbigail Wold, another true freshman, wrestling at 180 pounds. After losing by technical fall in the fourth round, Wold wrestled back to a fifth-place matchup before losing by technical fall, 10-0, to take sixth place.

Other wrestlers for the Grizzlies included Rylie McCabe, Bella Devoto, Nylaa Barmore, Abril Montes, Paige Fowler, and Amanda Yu Ramírez.

The Grizzlies return to the mat Dec. 3, when they travel to Fort Hays State for the Bob Smith Open.
