DENVER, Colo. – Liana Fernandez etched her name into Adams State's women's wrestling records, making history for the women's wrestling squad with a flawless 2-0 record, clinching the coveted 143-pound title at the Inaugural Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (RMAC) Women's Wrestling Championships., held at Regis University on Saturday.
Fernandez, the trailblazer for Grizzlies wrestling, also propelled the team forward with her stellar performance, accumulating 18 crucial team points, steering them to a commendable fifth-place finish. Her dominance in the 143-pound bracket was evident as she swiftly dispatched opponents, starting with a lightning-fast fall over Texas Woman's Poorna Babu in just 41 seconds. She followed it up with another impressive victory, pinning Texas Woman's Jermariah Ferguson in a mere 1 minute and 34 seconds.
At 109 pounds,
Candice Brickell finished in fifth place and earned 11 points. She went 2-2 on the day and won her fifth-place match with a fall over Chadron State's Brianna Vollendroff in 4:19.
Austria Holland went 1-2 and earned 13 points for the team as she won the third place match with a fall.
Brianna Johnson finished in sixth place at 130 pounds while
Marisa Rimbert finished in fifth at 136 pounds.
Julianna Candelaria competed at 109 pounds,
Rylie McCabe at 123 pounds,
Trinity Perez at 130 pounds and
Miranda Sanchez at 143 pounds.
Adams State will continue the championship portion of the season on Feb. 24 at the NCWWC Region V Champion Tournament, which Texas Woman's will host in Denton, Texas.
