Alamosa, Colo. – The Adams State Volleyball team opens their home slate tomorrow September, 11, taking on Texas A&M-Kingsville at 6 p.m. Coming off a tough start to the season, the Grizzlies are eager to pick up a win on their home court against a Javelinas team that has shown strong form early in 2024.
Adams State Grizzlies Overview:
The Grizzlies (1-3) have struggled to find consistency, with a single win against Western New Mexico but competitive losses to Midwestern State, Northwestern Oklahoma, and Southern Arkansas. Adams State has had strong individual performances, with players like Cindy Garcia leading the way. Garcia, with an impressive 4.23 kills per set, will be pivotal in the Grizzlies' attack.
The Grizzlies offensive efficiency has been a weak spot so far, hitting at just .101 as a team. They've committed 103 attacking errors in just 503 attempts, which has been a major factor in their slow start.
On the defensive side, Adams State has been solid, averaging 15 digs per set, led by libero Sierra Leone Sanchez, who has been a rock in the back row, averaging 3.46 digs per set. However, their blocking game has been less impactful, with just 1.46 blocks per set.
Texas A&M-Kingsville Javelinas Overview:
The Javelinas (3-1) have had a strong start to the 2024 season, with three victories on their home court. Their wins against Westminster, Southern Nazarene, and Missouri Southern State were solid performances, though they dropped a tough five-set match to Minnesota-Duluth.
Offensively, Texas A&M-Kingsville is a balanced and efficient team, hitting .248 as a group. Leading the charge is Ayanna Jackson, who averages 2.87 kills per set while hitting at an impressive .432 clip. Kendall Harrington and Rylan Pollard have also been key contributors, averaging 2.64 and 2.43 kills per set, respectively. With multiple scoring threats, the Javelinas pose a challenge for the Grizzlies' defense.
The Javelinas serve has also been a potent weapon, with the team averaging 2.33 aces per set. Isabel Neu and Elisa Carli have been particularly effective in this area, combining for 14 service aces over four matches. Defensively, Texas A&M-Kingsville has been solid, averaging 13.87 digs per set, with Neu leading the way at 4.73 digs per set
