Grand Junction, Colo. – The Adams State Grizzlies faced a tough test against the No. 7-ranked Colorado Mesa Mavericks in their latest women's wrestling dual. Despite standout performances by Austria Holland and Corrie Williams, the Mavericks took control early and never looked back, securing a 38-8 victory.
Colorado Mesa 38, Adams State 8
The dual opened at 103 pounds, where Katelyn Faczak of Adams State faced No. 11-ranked Jennesis Martinez. Faczak fought hard but was pinned at 4:14, giving the Mavericks an early 5 points.
At 110 pounds, No. 11-ranked Austria Holland provided a spark for the Grizzlies. In a tightly contested match against Isabella Morales, Holland came out on top with a 6-4 decision, earning Adams State 3 points and keeping the team in the mix.
The momentum shifted back to Colorado Mesa at 117 pounds. Rylie McCabe wrestled against No. 14-ranked Marjorie McDaniel but was overwhelmed, falling by technical fall with a 10-0 score at 2:15.
The Mavericks continued their dominance at 124 pounds, where Bella Devoto battled Lorianna Piestewa. Despite her best efforts, Devoto was pinned at 2:53, adding another 5 points to Colorado Mesa's tally.
At 131 pounds, Brisa Salas stepped up for the Grizzlies but struggled against No. 19-ranked Hania Halverson, who secured a 12-2 technical fall victory at 2:23.
Adams State's second victory came at 138 pounds, where No. 7-ranked Corrie Williams dominated Valerie Glenn with a 10-0 technical fall in just 2:09. This impressive performance added 4 points to the Grizzlies' total.
The Mavericks closed the dual with a series of strong performances. At 145 pounds, Erica Schroeder earned a forfeit victory for Colorado Mesa. No. 16-ranked Gretchen Donally pinned Abby Smith in just 34 seconds at 160 pounds. At 180 pounds, No. 12-ranked Alison Evans defeated Abigail Wold by technical fall, and No. 11-ranked Isabeau Shalack sealed the dual with a pinfall victory over Brook Newton at 1:08 in the 207-pound match.
Despite the overall result, the Grizzlies showed grit in individual matches, with highlights from Holland and Williams. Adams State will aim to build on these performances as they prepare for their next dual at home on Thursday, Jan. 30, when they take on Chadron State College at 5 p.m. in Alamosa.
