Grizzlies Crown Two Champs as Holland and Williams Lead the Way

DENTON, Texas – The Adams State Grizzlies sent eight wrestlers to compete at the NCWWC Women's Region 8 Championships, walking away with two champions who dominated their brackets. The Grizzlies did not field wrestlers in the 103- and 145-pound divisions.

Austria Holland, a returning Adams State 2024 national qualifier and reigning RMAC Wrestler of the Year, remained undefeated this season at 8-0 with a dominant performance in the 110-pound bracket. Holland received two byes to start the tournament before facing Rylee Balcazar of Chadron State in the semifinals, where she secured a first-period pin in 1:23. In the finals, she defeated Sophia Cornish of Colorado Mesa by decision, 8-2, to claim the regional title.

At 117 pounds, Rylie McCabe received a first-round bye but fell by technical fall to No. 2 seed Marjorie McDaniel of Colorado Mesa at 2:58. In the consolation bracket, McCabe received another bye before falling to Isabell Ortiz of Fort Hays State by pin in 4:14.

Bella Devoto, coming off a strong performance at the RMAC Championships, struggled in the 124-pound bracket. She lost by decision, 7-0, to Emarie Bolosan of William Jewell College before moving to the consolation bracket, where she fell to Madysn Grof of Simon Fraser by the same 7-0 score.

Abril Montes De Oca wrestled at 131 pounds, where she faced Jamie Laswell of Fort Hays State and lost by technical fall in 47 seconds. In the consolation bracket, she was pinned by Ellisa Jimenez of William Jewell in 1:29.

At 138 pounds, top-seeded Corrie Williams dominated her way to the finals. She opened with a technical fall victory over Lovey Beebe of Minot State at 2:23, followed by a quick pin against Laisha Rios of Texas Woman's University in just 49 seconds. In the semifinals, Williams continued her streak with a first-period pin against Ashlynn Goodwin of Fort Hays State in 1:42. Facing her toughest match of the day, Williams edged Nichole Moore of Fort Hays State in a high-scoring final, securing a 12-11 decision to win the regional title.

At 160 pounds, Abby Smith faced stiff competition, falling to Josie Houk of Fort Hays State by pin at 1:35 in the opening round. In the consolation bracket, Smith lost by technical fall to Paige Beals of Pacific University in 52 seconds.

In the 180-pound division, Abigail Wold received a first-round bye before falling to Paige Maher of Simon Fraser by pin in 16 seconds. She bounced back with a pinfall victory over Audrina Mauldin of Texas Woman's University at 3:58 but was eliminated after a pin by Ella Shevlin of Chadron State at 5:43.

Brook Newton, wrestling at 207 pounds, received a first-round bye but fell to Julia Richey of Simon Fraser by pin at 1:19. In the consolation bracket, she dropped a close decision, 5-2, to Jaycee Portee of Texas Woman's University.

The Grizzlies finished eighth out of 11 teams, securing 40 team points.

Holland and Williams will advance to the NCWWC National Championships in Coralville, Iowa, on March 7-8.
